wake守灵
该词指守灵，即在葬礼前一天晚上为刚刚去世的人守夜。尤其是在爱尔兰，守灵过程中还可举办一些狂欢活动——从某种意义上讲，这也是对亡者一生的庆祝。据载，该术语的这层含义最早出现在古英语中。守夜即指守夜者通宵不睡觉。有人认为，之所以要守夜是为了确保死者确已过世，而不是处于睡眠状态并有可能苏醒过来——这一说法实则与守夜的原因无关。
