wagon (on the wagon )戒酒

on the wagon指戒酒。该短语最初写作on the water-cart。19世纪晚期，人们在夏季用马车拉水，把水喷洒在干燥而又尘土飞扬的道路上。到了19世纪90年代，出现了这样一种说法：宁愿爬上洒水车喝口水，也绝不喝烈性酒。因而，在小说《圆白菜地的韦戈斯夫人》（Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch ，1901）中首次出现了I’m on the water-cart这样的表达方式，即“我正试图戒酒”。很快，短语中的cart被wagon取代，原先的表达方式缩写成on the wagon。
