真实的凡尔赛（2016）

结果当然是完胜荷兰人
The result? A complete victory against the Dutch.
返回巴黎的路上 人♥民♥夹道欢呼
Afterwards, on the road back to Paris, people shouted,
“国王万岁 引领胜仗者万岁”
“Long live the King, and Monsieur, who won the battle!”
路易听了大为不悦
Louis didn’t like the sound of that.
绘制卡塞尔之役时
Louis made sure that when the Battle of Cassel was painted,
路易要确保自己才是主角
it represented his version of events.

In this glorious painting, the battle rages, a gun is fired,
一名士兵应声倒下
and a soldier falls.

And here, in the thick of the fighting,

is the king on his warhorse in his white-plumed hat.
可事实上 路易不曾踏上战场
But in life, not art, Louis wasn’t even there.
英雄的荣耀时刻当属菲利普 可他在哪呢
The hero of the hour was Philippe. And where’s he?
这里 在角落里 哥哥的阴影之下
Here, stuck in the corner, in his brother’s shadow.
得知弟弟打了胜仗的时候
Seen nursing a bump on the head at Versailles,
路易正在凡尔赛宫接受头部伤口处理
Louis receives word of his brother’s victory.
“国王步兵队完胜西班牙军 我们欣喜万分 特发此捷报
“We report with joy the success of the king’s Infantry against the troops of the Spanish.
我军即将展开对康布雷的围攻”
“Siege is now laid to the town of Cambrai.”
可算等来了点好消息
At last, some good news.
“在所有以国王之名浴血奋战的英雄当中
“Most remarkable of all heroes present in the king’s name,
有一人表现尤为突出 陛下的弟弟 菲利普亲王
Is His Majesty’s own brother, Prince Philippe,
奥尔良公爵
The Duke of Orleans,
战场上 他骁勇善战…”
who has shown bravery on the battlefield…”
就读到这吧 -“一位真正为人所铭记的英雄…”
That’s enough news for now. – “A true and everlasting hero…”
够了
I said enough!
而这就是现实
And so it was in real life.
路易如此嫉妒弟弟的成就
Louis was so jealous of his little brother’s achievement
以至于再也没有给过他领兵参战的机会
that he never again put him in charge of an army.
路易不允许任何人盖过太阳王的光芒
No-one could outshine the Sun King.
如果路易是太阳的话 菲利普就是月亮
If Louis was the sun, Philippe was the moon,
只能反射哥哥的光辉荣耀
only allowed to shine in his brother’s reflected glory.
在凡尔赛宫 所有人都围着太阳王转
At Versailles, everyone revolved around the Sun King.
1684年 路易将政♥治♥中心正式迁至凡尔赛
Louis officially moved the seat of government
并在此设立宫廷
and installed his court here in 1684.
余后30年的统治时光中
And for the remaining 30 years of his reign,
他只回过8次巴黎
he only returned to Paris eight times.
法国的君主制统治
It was a staggering transformation in the way
发生了翻天覆地的变化
the French monarchy ruled.
路易建立了君主专♥制♥的中♥央♥集权王国
Louis had created the ultimate power base,
浩浩荡荡五千人任他差遣
5,000 souls living firmly underneath the royal thumb.
纷繁礼教与穷奢极欲
It’s tempting to see all this crazy ritual and extravagance
大家都在等着绝对君主制的覆灭
as just another example of absolute power corrupting absolutely.
因为通常情况下我们会认定 奢侈与残忍♥的组合
You’d think that this combination of luxury and cruelty
必将导致灭亡
would lead to violent collapse.
但路易是个例外
But in Louis’ case, it didn’t.
他结束了国家地方割据 四分五裂的状态
The country was no longer torn apart by feuding nobles,
使得法国因其丰富文化与成熟体制扬名四海
and France became renowned for its culture and sophistication.
路易临终时宣言
On his deathbed, Louis pronounced,
“吾告憾人世 然吾国长存”
“I depart, but the state will always remain.”
确实长存了 至少 存在了好一阵
Well, remain it did, at least for a while.
但有一点是肯定的
And what will surely always remain,
路易的凡尔赛宫定会长存
is Louis’ Palace of Versailles.
