and so all the elephant have moved out of their sort of historical grounds

around the protected areas further east,
前往索马里地区
and it’s moving into a Somali area
一直以来 这里偷猎事件频发
where historically there’s been a lot of poaching.
而且政♥府♥对这里的管理越来越疏忽
And there’s less and less presence of government here,
大象只能靠自己生存 没人照顾它们
so these elephant are on their own, there’s nobody looking after them,
可它们对我们很重要
and they’re important to us.
对我而言 每头大象都很重要
To me, every single elephant counts.
它们不只是大象
These aren’t just elephant.
也是有家庭有感情的生物个体
These are individuals with families and relationships.
所以 杀掉象群里的一头大象
And so, killing an elephant out of a herd
远不只是杀掉一个动物个体
is much more than just killing an individual animal.
而是在破坏一个家庭
You’re destroying a family.
象群由占主导地位的母象统领
You know, elephant are led by a dominant mother
她来决定象群往哪儿走
who is making the decisions of where the elephant go

and when they go.

And if one is to lose that mother figure,

suddenly you’re left with teenagers, you’re left with young animals

having to make decisions without any historical memory

The rangers face grave danger every day.

Over the last ten years, over 1,000 rangers
已有一千多名巡逻员牺牲
have given their lives in the name of conservation.

We live in a sorry world

when an elephant requires the sacrifice of a human being

for its own survival.

But these people cannot face the bullets and the threats alone.
