在我们下一次演出的时候，他兴高采烈地跑过来
So the next time we played, he came over to me and he was so excited.

And he came over and he goes, “What’d you think?”

And I looked at him and I couldn’t, I just couldn’t really let him know
…我多混帐，因为我完全忘记去听他的歌♥了
how much of an asshole I really was, that I hadn’t even listened to his music,
这可是他生命中最重要的东西，所以我只能回答”超棒的”
his most important thing in his life. And I said, “It was great.
“我太喜欢了，欢迎你之后多和我们交流”
“I loved it. You can totally open for us.”
我回家之后马上听了那张专辑，被他无与伦比的天才完完全全被震撼到了
And so I went home and I listened to it and I was blown away at its incredible genius.
Walking the Cow-Daniel Johnston
我通过一种极具他个人风格的方式认识地他
I met Daniel Johnston, in kind of the classic Daniel Johnston way.
当时是星期六，我正在奥斯汀档案室工作
It was a Saturday. I was working at the Austin Chronicle.
我一个人坐在办公室写东西
I was alone in the office and I was sitting there writing,
听到门口有声音，但不是有人在敲门
and I heard something at the door. Not a knock.
而是有人在门口踱步
But somebody like, shuffling at the door.
我实在忍♥不住去开了门，看见Daniel站在外面
Finally I went over and I opened the door, and Daniel was standing there.
那样一个瘦弱而焦躁不安的青年
And he was this skinny little kid who looked fairly demented.
手里拿着一个磁带，说想把这给我
And he had a tape. And he said, “I just wanted to give you my tape.”
于是我说，好的，我会把它转交给音乐界的行家
So I said, “Great. You know, I’ll give it to a music person.
如果他们喜欢，我们会给你答复的
“If they like it, maybe we’ll review it.
但我没有在保证任何事
“But I’m not promising you anything.”

And Daniel goes, “You know, I wasn’t really giving you that to review.

So Daniel goes away.

And I put it on the tape player and it just blew my mind.

I mean, it was one of those where I got it right away.

It’s like, you know, imagine meeting,

He actually didn’t just record a tape and mass produce it.

He sometimes couldn’t duplicate, so he had to sing the entire tape

from beginning to end to hand you a copy.
回家之后，又从头来一遍，一首接一首地唱直到把磁带录满
Go back home. Start again. Song by song. Fill up the tape.
拿去给另外一个人，回家填满磁带…….一遍又一遍，直到开始另一张专辑
Hand another person a copy. Fill it up. Go. And finally write another album.
当然又是同样的程序
Start the whole process over again.
我所知道的他的首场演出
KATHY: As far as I know his very first, like, public show that he did
是给Glass Eye暖场
was done opening for Glass Eye.
他当时过于紧张了
And he was so nervous.
身体真的在颤抖
He literally was vibrating.
同时，自从他来到奥斯汀，决定…
And he also had recently decided, since coming to Austin,
…放弃使用他极其擅长的钢琴
that he wasn’t going to play piano anymore, something he does rather well.
决定和所有奥斯汀吉他歌♥手一样开始弹吉他
He decided that he was gonna play guitar like all the Austin guitar singers.
但他不会弹
And he really couldn’t play.
对他来说挺恐怖的
That was scary for him, too.
突然一切都安静了，像在教堂一样
All of a sudden it quieted down like it was church or something.
Daniel走上台，但看上去很不寻常
Daniel comes on stage. It was very unusual
因为任何做开场演出的音乐人都是很走运的
because anyone playing their first show, it’s like you’re lucky
因为所有人都会认真去看
to get anyone to pay attention.
但所有人都极其安静，他看起来又如此紧张
But everyone was absolutely silent and he looked so nervous,

he looked like he was gonna vomit the whole time.

LOUIS: So when you saw him perform,

I mean, especially in the early days, when he did the two or three song sets,

sometimes they were God-awful,

and sometimes they were unbelievably brilliant.

People in the audience tended to be like,

“What? Is this is a joke? Is this guy supposed to be cool?”
开始左顾右盼，看自己该怎么表现才对
And they would be looking around at each other like, “How am I supposed to react?”
因为他在很多方面都太少见太真实了，大家很难去接受这些
Because he was so raw and so real in a lot of ways, that people couldn’t take it.

LOWS: He’s got a full shift at McDonald’s.

And as close as I can tell, he can’t do anything.

He can’t cook. He doesn’t clean very well.
很多地方其实还是会给他活干的
DICK: As in a lot of places, you know, they’ll give him work,
但他最后只能干擦桌子这种没什么技术含量的活
but then he migrates to the job with the least skill, which was cleaning tables.
真不明白他怎么保住这份工作的
KEN: It was amazing that he could keep his job
因为总有一堆人跑过来
because everybody was always coming in there wanting to,
只为了和Daniel打招呼
“Hey, Daniel. Hi, Daniel!”
你也知道，快餐店从来不喜欢这种占着位置不买♥♥东西的举动
And, well, they don’t take well to that at, you know, fast food joints.
但他真的在这干了很久
But he was employed there for a long time.
你也知道在这总能找到他
And you knew you could find him there,
戴着他的小白帽穿着他的工作服
just in his little hat and his little shirt there,
打扫卫生
cleaning up,
清理别人洒出来的东西什么的
cleaning up other people’s spills and stuff.

DICK: When I went to visit him at McDonald’s,
可能也是我第一次发现
I think it was probably the first time I recognized that

he was spacing out, you know.

That there was a disconnection from reality or something going on.

由于同时缺乏基本判断能力
可能带来越轨的行为
提升感染性病的风险
或意外怀孕
患者
有着奇异的症状
也许会把这些当作荣誉
勋章
装饰物
胸针
或一块想摆脱的破布
ta也许又吵又闹
自残
如果他真这么做了，他也不会去照料伤口
睡眠糟糕而没有规律
忙得没有吃饭的时间
这些因素和行为就造成体重的下降
在极度暴躁的情况下
