to speak to you today,
来讲述我一生的境遇
to tell you about my condition,

and the other world.

MABEL JOHNSTON: He was different.
他一生出来我就知道他和别人都不一样
I noticed that from the start that Dan was different.
我把他放在我们小小卧室的婴儿床上
I had him on a crib in our little bedroom
我会进去和他说话，给他换尿布
and I would go in and talk to him, change his diaper,
我对他大吼大叫，他也对我哭天喊地
and I would squeal at him and he would squeal back at me.
我想，这就是小宝贝的交流方式吧
That’s a small baby communicating, I thought
他比他的四个哥哥和姐姐年轻六岁
Being, uh, six years younger than his four brothers and sisters,

he was pampered by them.

And, uh, they nursed him along.

But we didn’t notice at that time

that there was any special talents involved or anything.

MABEL: When he went to school, they tested the kids,

and Dan was put in the highest group of the highest class.

His teacher was really mad at him and it’s understandable
因为Daniel从不循规蹈矩
because Dan doesn’t follow directions.
当他进入初中的时候
You know, when he was in junior high,
他突然一下失去了他所有美妙的自信心
he suddenly lost all his wonderful confidence,
我想应该就是从那时起他开始生病了
and I guess it was the beginning of his illness.
BILL:他和他哥哥打算做一部他们自己的电影
BILL: He and his brother decided to make their own movie.
这是两兄弟共同努力的结果。
And it was a collaborative effort between the two brothers working together.
在电影里，Daniel得装扮成他的妈妈
And Dan had to change clothes and pretend to be his mother.
因为他妈妈和我都没有真正参演这部电影
Because his mother and I weren’t in the movie actually.

Tell about it, Mabel.
Daniel是电影的导演和主演
MABEL: Dan is the director and the actor
扮演他自己
portraying himself in parts
和他恐怖的母亲
and his horrible mother in other parts.

I think he was having fun teasing me. What do you think, Bill?

BILL: Yeah, he… He was doing it for humor.

DANIEL: You are real lazy. Wake up.
有时候很难和Daniel商量什么事情
MABEL”. Dan’s hard to deal with sometimes.

He thought, “I’m artistic. I shouldn’t have to do those things.”
该起床准备去上学啦
Time to get up and get ready for school.

DANIEL: Get up in there, breakfast is ready.

MABEL: He wanted to be comic all the time. He just couldn’t get over it.

DANIEL: Okay.
他们当时玩的真的很开心
MABEL: They were having too good a time.
他和我的关系也不是那种典型的母子关系
I don’t think his relationship with me was typical.
你认为他真的觉得我是那样的形象？
Do you suppose he really pictured me that way?
他们拍出来的内容真的太可笑了
This is ridiculous, what they’re showing.

I think it’s popcorn and green Kool-Aid.
他一直挺让我们伤脑筋的
He was a trial.
我在高中是那种万众瞩目的玩点艺术的家伙
I was sort of the star art guy at the high school.

我当时听到一个玩艺术新生的传闻，有很多人开始关注他
And I started hearing rumors of this new art guy, the new art star.
你知道的，那种冉冉升起的新星，我想赶快和他认识
You know, the new kid in town, I had to find out who this was.
我有个朋友告诉我，这人叫Dan Johnston
A friend of mine told me, “There’s this kid, Dan Johnston,
他画画真的很棒，而且还做些音乐什么的
“he can really draw, he’s a musician or something.”
所以他听起来比我更胜一筹，因为他还会做音乐
So he kind of had one up on me, he was a musician.
这人绝对是个天才，绝对的天才
The guy is a natural, an absolute natural.
他甚至不需要专门去学怎么画画
He never even had to learn to draw.
他一开始就画的绝妙，之后只会越画越好
He just got better from great.
你知道的，我得和这人一起玩，得接近这种奇妙的艺术
You know, I had to hang outwith this guy. I had to be around this art.
所以我们开始一起玩，并一起做一些艺术作品
So we just started hanging out and doing art together, actually.

The eyeball thing was sort of like his intro calling card.
我有在情感上触动你吗
DANIEL: Did it touch you emotionally?
这是他神秘的开端
DAVID: It was his mysterious entry.
这太与众不同了
GIRL: It’s definitely different.

GIRL 2: I’m speechless.

DAVID: Everybody was, “Who’s the eyeball guy?”

You know, he was painting these eyeballs everywhere.
甚至会直接画在我们高中的墙上
He would actually draw on walls all over the high school.
DANIEL实在很有想象力
GIRL 3: I thought Dan’s was very imaginative.

DAVID: Daniel, he just exudes an’.
而且他根本停止不了创造这些艺术内容
He can’t stop making art.
没见过他什么时候坐在那思考自己要去做什么
He never sits and thinks, “What am I gonna do?”
他总是直接抓起什么东西就开始做
He just grabs something.
Story Of An Artist-Daniel Johnston
Listen up and I’ll tell a story
About an artist growing old
Some would try for fame and glory
Others aren’t so bold
Everyone, and friends and family
saying, “Hey! Get a job!”
“Why do you only do that only?
“Why are you so odd?
“We don’t really like what you do
“We don’t think anyone ever will
“It’s a problem that you have
“And this problem’s made you ill”
The artist walks alone
Someone says behind his back
“He’s got his gall to call himself that!
“He doesn’t even know where he’s at!”
他并不是为了看漫画而去买♥♥漫画书
BILL: He wasn’t buying them for comic books,
他是想找寻漫画里蕴含的一些艺术内容
he was buying them for the artwork that was involved on the comics.
有些艺术家就这么激励着他
And some of the artists were his incentive
去成为一个真正的艺术家
to try to be an artist himself.
他们相当于他的灵感来源吧
They were an inspiration to him.
现在来谈谈他的电影创造
DAVID: Now talk about the cinema of Daniel Johnston, then.
他不存在受任何东西的影响
He doesn’t have influences.
他不是那种刻意地逼自己看一大堆卓别林
He doesn’t sit down and consciously watch Chaplin
然后进行模仿，或者有段时间持续学习基顿
and then learn, or this is my Keaton period.
他完全不是这样的，他甚至不知道这些人是谁
It’s not like that. He doesn’t even know who these guys are.
跟你讲，他一拿到那台8毫米摄像机就拍了部电影
You know, he gets a Super 8 and he makes a movie.
但Daniel对自己的事情都很认真
Dan took himself seriously.

He, for some reason, thought he was going to be

an artist because probably of the attention he got.

The family room would sometimes be almost full of kids

and one of them told me that he’s going to be famous someday.

And I thought, “That silly stuff,” you know?

DAVID: He lived in the basement of his parents’ house.

They got this perfectly normal ranch house out in the country behind New Cumberland.
Daniel也就拥有了这个超赞的实验室
He’s got this amazing lab,

like this amazing factory downstairs.

He’s turned a garage and two sort of utility rooms
变成了他自己的卧室和一个艺术工厂
into a bedroom and an art factory,

and he’s just got everywhere, magazines, tapes.

In fact, he’s recreated it in Waller, where he lives today.

It’s a duplicate of the same room.
