[Tommy] We are about 1,200 feet up the wall at our base camp.

He had a lot of difficulty in school.

I was developmentally delayed through… probably still.

But meanwhile, my dad was, like, the symbol of a man.

He was this big bodybuilder dude and mountain climber.

Larger than life.

[Dad]Tommy was small.

He was way behind.

Didn’t crawl until he was over two.

[Tommy] I think my dad felt

the best way to prepare this fragile little kid for the world

So he took me on all these adventures.

Every summer, we’d go to Yosemite with my family,

and my dad would take me climbing on these giant walls.

and he did it with a six-year-old.

He basically took hardship and rephrased it as growth.

[Tommy] By the time I was 14 or 15,

there was climbs that I could do that my dad couldn’t.

We thought we’d drive over there and watch the comp

[Dad] And the day before the big competition,
