Written in the Palace

Tang Wenzong

The carriage way covered with autumn grass,

In my imperial garden flowers blow.

Who knows what I think on climbing, alas!

How can I let those nearby eunuchs know?

The poem “Written in the Palace” is a five-line poem written by the late Tang poet Li Ang. The first two lines of the poem are the poet’s view of the scene he sees, in which the emperor’s residence is depressed and his visitors are scarce. The second two lines are the poet’s emotion, indicating that Emperor Wen had no trusted ministers around him, and his state of mind was desolate and miserable. The whole poem starts with the scenery and turns to the heart, expressing the poet’s pain of being isolated and helpless.
