Reply to Prefect of Wuling

Wang Changling

For miles and miles I have my sword employed,

With my humble words you won’t be annoyed.

I have rendered poor service by your side.

Please accept my gratitude justified.

“Reply to Prefect of Wuling” is a five-line poem written by Wang Changling, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. In the first two lines, the poet writes about his own aspirations and his friendship with his friend, and in the second two lines, he further concretizes the friendship between friends by using the allusion to Daliang Guest and Xinling Jun. The use of this allusion is natural and evocative, saving the poet a lot of ink and writing.
