In summer, the sun never sets for half the year.

The unending daylight brings a great wave of new life.
所有动物都迫不及待地沐浴在和煦的阳光下
Everyone rushes to raise their families in the warm summer sun.
即使新生命生机蓬勃 对我们而言夏天总是特別难熬
Even with all this new life, summer is always a season of hardship for us.
你需要抓紧每一个机会
You needed to take every opportunity.
港海豹看起来很诱人
The harbor seals were so tempting.
但是现在没有浮冰给妈妈助力
But Mom had no ice floes to help her hunt now.
只能即兴发挥
She had to improvise.
她静静窥伺着猎物 我认真观摩她的一举一动
I studied her every move as she stalked them silently.
一旦她的伪装被揭穿
But once her cover was blown,
这场追逐游戏 注定以失败告终
it became a game of chase that we were never going to win.
海豹有恃无恐地在附近游戈
They swam rings around us.
然而妈妈总是能挖空心思弄来一些食物
But Mom somehow was always able to pull some food out of nowhere.
晚餐是海藻
Seaweed for dinner.
最讨厌晚餐吃海藻了
We hated seaweed for dinner.
尤其是我弟弟
Especially my brother.
宁愿饿肚子 也不愿意吃海藻
He’d rather go without dinner than eat seaweed.
随着夏季来临 食物变得更加稀缺
As summer dragged on, food became even more scarce.
猎物就在眼前 却又鞭长莫及
It was there, but it was often very hard to reach.
每年夏季 鸟儿都会在悬崖上产卵
Birds came to the cliffs every summer to have their chicks.
为了躲避捕食者 每一寸空间都被占满了
They had to nest wherever they could, to be safe from predators.
领地宝贵 寸土必争
Every square inch was precious.
冰熊为了捕食可以不顾一切地往上爬
We ice bears will climb almost anything for food,
妈妈准备给我们演示一下
and Mom was ready to show us how.
但我们不是唯一饥饿的冰熊
But we weren’t the only hungry ones there.
另一只公熊闻风而来 赶在她前面
She’d been outdone by yet another male bear.
光是攀爬已经非常危险
The climb was dangerous enough.
妈妈要避其锋芒 远离是非之地
Mom wasn’t going to attempt it with him up there.
无数碎石在他脚下滑落
The cliffs were crumbling beneath his feet.
想在悬崖峭壁之间捕捉飞禽 简直难如登天
Trying to snatch prey that flies on a dangerous rock face is not an option.
他只能靠鸟蛋和雏鸟充饥
He had to settle for eggs or chicks.
悬崖底下 弟弟设法为我们找到了更好的一餐
Far below, my brother managed to catch us a much better meal.
今天算是小胜一场
It was our little victory.
夏天经常一无所得
Summer was often like this.
饥肠辘辘的冰熊为了能吃上一口
Ice bears forced to extremes by hunger.
不惜铤而走险
All for a tiny bite.
整个夏天能吃的都是残羹剩饭
All summer ever provided was scraps.
敢于冒险猎食的才能求得生存
Those who took the risks were the ones who ate.
陆地能提供食物 只是这里的夏天不适合冰熊
The land could provide food, just not for us. Not this time.
如今 夏天变得越来越长了
Today, the summers are getting longer and longer.
我学会在食物短缺时 寻找残羹勉强活下来
What I learned about finding small scraps in hard times has kept us alive.
但一只年轻的冰熊不仅需要生存
But a young ice bear needs to do more than just survive.
还需要成长
She needs to grow.
记得在第二年的秋天
I remember, in autumn of that second year,
我们有了一次意外收获
we had an incredible discovery.
这是一头被冲上岸边的鲸鱼尸体
A dead whale washed up on the shore.
这足以让我们吃上好一阵子了
This would keep us fed for a very long time.
但我很快意识到要吃上肉并不容易
But I quickly realized this was not going to be an easy meal.
鲸鱼皮太厚完全撕咬不动
Getting through the thick skin was nearly impossible.
皮下厚厚的鲸脂香气四溢 让我垂涎三尺
Underneath was so much rich blubber. I could smell it.
棘手的是怎么吃到鲸脂
But the trick was getting to it.
刚刚取得一些进展 另一头公熊
Just as we were making some progress, another male.
再次与我们狭路相逢 口中夺食
Come to ruin our good fortune, again.
我们只能退避三舍
It was best to keep our distance.
至少他对鲸鱼比对我们更感兴趣
At least he would be more interested in the whale than us.
我嫉妒得红了眼
I was so jealous,
看着他用强大的下颚穿透鲸鱼的皮肤
watching as he broke through the skin with his more powerful jaws.
妈妈认为机不可失 想趁机浑水摸鱼捞一把
Mom decided this opportunity was too great to abandon.
功夫不负有心人
Good things come to those who wait.
接下来的日子里 诱人的食物香飘十里
In the days that followed, more and more bears arrived,
越来越多的熊闻味而来
lured by the smell of the delicious feast.
妈妈不让我们靠近 直到它们吃饱为止
Mom wasn’t letting me anywhere close, until they were all well fed.
大家都卖♥♥力地撕咬着鲸鱼肉 大快朵颐
It didn’t take long for all those jaws to tear through the skin
尽情享受里面肥美多汁的的脂肪
and gorge on the juicy goodness inside.
我好想加入它们
I so wanted in on that.
等到饱餐以后
Once they’d had their fill,
它们下水洗掉粘到身上的残渣
they all washed off their sloppy meal with a nice swim.
我从来没有看到过这么多冰熊相聚在一个地方
I had never seen so many ice bears together in one place.
一起享受这场无与伦比的盛宴 不需要抢夺食物
In that moment, with so much food to go around, there was no competition.
大家可以尽情享受彼此间的陪伴
So they simply reveled in each other’s company.
等到它们当中体型最健硕的熊也吃饱了
Finally, when even the biggest of them was stuffed completely,
我快步上前
I took my turn.
比海藻美味多了
Way better than seaweed.
我们历经磨难
After all we’d been through,
饱受饥饿和艰辛
all the hunger and hardship,
我们一家三口快乐嬉戏让我记忆犹新
I can still remember the three of us just playing.
那是我生命中最美好的一天
It was the best day of my life.
第二个冬天比第一个糟糕得多
Our second winter was much worse than our first.
那些风暴的力量
The power of those storms…
又是一番全新的挑战
they were something totally new.
冬去春来 只剩下我们两个了
When spring arrived, there were only two of us.
寒冬夺走了我的弟弟
The winter had taken my brother.
从此以后 就只剩下妈妈和我相依为命
From then on, it was just Mom and me.
冰与火的较量 这次是骄阳获胜
Fire and ice have always been enemies. But now, fire is winning.
甚至脚下的冰盖也开始逐渐消融
Even the land is beginning to melt beneath our feet.
昔日回家的路线也变得无法通行
The old routes through our home are becoming impassable.
这不是我所知道的夏天
This is not the summer I knew.
是另一个陌生的季节
This is some other season.
儿时的第三个夏季最为温暖
I remember the third summer of my childhood was the warmest.
海冰很早就融化了
The sea ice melted away early.
几乎不可能再捕到海豹
And the seals were almost impossible to find.
妈妈带我到另一个特别的地方去寻找食物
So Mom led me to another of her special places to find food.
岛屿的尖端有从未见过的新型猎物
The tip of an island, where a new type of prey I’d never seen

was waiting for us.

Walrus.
这些长着奇怪獠牙的生物让我着迷
I was fascinated by these strange creatures with the strange teeth.
也可能是惶恐 我不太记得了
Or maybe it was “frightened.” I can’t remember.
妈妈带我来这里是有原因的
But Mom had a reason for bringing me here.
是时候轮到我亲自动手捕猎了
It was time for me to try my hand at hunting.
我蹲在一旁盘算哪一个目标更容易得手
I tried to decide which one would make the easiest target.
却发现都不容易
I decided none of them.
妈妈去海滩上方审视海象的分布情况
Mom went up to investigate the walrus gathered at the top of the beach.
成年海象挤在一起密不透风
Adults, all tightly packed together.
体型大得无计可施
Too many, and too big to handle.
接着她回到水中查看我的进展
When she came back down to the water to see how I was progressing,
我制定了捕猎计划
I had almost worked out a plan.
海象妈妈用前肢抱着刚出生的幼崽
Mother walrus, holding their newborn pups with their flippers.
幼崽作为猎物正合适
The perfect-sized prey for us.
若是想从水中的海象妈妈那里偷走幼崽
Just swimming up and stealing them from their mothers in the water
简直是痴心妄想
was not going to happen.
但也许海滩上会有幼崽躲藏在成年海象之中
But maybe there would be some pups hiding among the adults on the beach.
一只幼崽就藏在象群的边缘
There were, tucked in around the edge of the huddle.
我蹲守在那里
I took up my position.
他们似乎并不在意
They didn’t seem to care.
直到妈妈向这边走来才惊慌四散
It wasn’t until Mom moved in and created panic

that they started moving into the water.

It worked.

A pup, left behind by a panicked mother.

It was the best meal we’d had in ages.

And I was finally taking a bigger role in hunting.

Just as winter was setting in that third year,
my life changed forever.
妈妈知道 我们是时候分道扬镳了
Mom knew it was time for me to make my own way.

She had taught me everything she could.
她才放我离开
So, she let me go.

Everything I’d learned from her, I would now have to attempt on my own.

It was frightening.
世界从未如此空茫和孤独
The world had never seemed so vast and lonely.
没有她我不知道能不能活下来
I didn’t know if I could survive without her.
在接下来的三年里 我独自徘徊
I wandered alone for the next three years.
但是那段日子里再也没有遇到另一只冰熊
I did not encounter another ice bear in all that time.
