鹧鸪天
苏轼
林断山明竹隐墙，
乱蝉衰草小池塘。
翻空白鸟时时见，
照水红蕖[1]细细香。
村舍外，
古城旁。
杖藜[2]徐步转斜阳。
殷勤昨夜三更雨，
又得浮生一日凉。

Partridges in the Sky
Su Shi
Through forest breaks appear hills and
Bamboo-screened wall;
Cicadas shrill o’er withered grass near a pool small.
White birds are seen now and then looping in the air;
Pink lotus blooms on lakeside exude fragrance spare.
Beyond the cots,
Near ancient town,
Cane in hand, I stroll round while the sun’s slanting down.
Thanks to the welcome rain which fell when night was deep,
Now in my floating life one more fresh day I reap.

“Partridges in the Sky” is a lyric by Su Shi, a writer of the Song Dynasty. It was written during the author’s relegation to Huangzhou and is a self-portrait of his secluded life in the countryside at that time. The upper part of the poem is about the scenery and the lower part is about the characters. The whole poem depicts a rural scene after a summer rain. The lyrics express the author’s joyful and leisurely state of mind after the rain. The lyricist first writes about the village scenery he saw while touring, and then points out that the tour and what he saw in the lyric were caused by the rain last night, expressing his joy at getting a new cool after the rain. The lyrics are written in such a way as to avoid a straightforward narrative, which makes the reading of the poem ebullient and evocative.
