Late Spring

Cao Bin

Over flowers fallen outdoors no one would sigh;

The glistening green shade spreads as far as the sky.

Orioles sing in the wood till they’re unheard beyond;

Alone I listen to the frogs by grassy pond.

“Late Spring” is a seven-line poem written by Cao Bin (bīn), a poet of the Song Dynasty. It is a poem describing the scenery of spring, describing flowers, birds and leaves to set off the word “twilight” and clarify the meaning of the title. The bright spring has disappeared quietly. The flowers have fallen, but the earth is already lush and green; the warbler song has stopped, and there are frogs everywhere in the green grass and pond. The poet’s lamentation expresses the poet’s feeling of cherishing spring. In contrast, the poet’s lively and lively scene in the twilight of spring is vividly expressed.
