And it’s something that he’d wanted to write for a long time,

An expedition from Massachusetts goes down there,

and come upon fossilized remains of alien entities,

Classical science is based on the idea that matter is dead and inert.

And I think “Alien” is very much the nightmare to that perspective.

is a prototypical instance of what Lovecraft called the fear of the unknown.
