他被治好了然后出院了
He got discharged, cured.
但是这不代表他不会复发 不是吗
It doesn’t mean he stayed cured, does it?

I feel absolutely calm and in a normal state.

This is what he writes me six weeks before he’s dead.
一个人怎么可能在六周之内从
How does a man go from being absolutely calm
完全平静到实施自杀呢
to being suicidal in six weeks?

It’s sad, I get that.
但是 现在送那封信又有什么意义呢
But, what good will delivering that letter do now?
他们之前非常亲密
They were very close.
文森特每天都给自己的弟弟写信
Vincent would write his brother every day.
我知道 因为那些信都是我送的
I know I’m the one who collected the letters.

If it were me, I’d want it.

I heard you were Vincent’s paint supplier.

怎么会呢
Well how come?
文森特告诉过我 他们兄弟俩的心是连着的
Two hearts, one mind that’s what Vincent told me.
也许他说的是真的
Maybe that was the case after all
因为文森特死后 西奥
because after Vincent died, Theo went
也开始迅速衰败
into sharp decline.
亲爱的 你需要些什么吗
Can I get you something my love?
他之前的状态也不好
He’d been poorly before,
但文森特的死彻底击垮了他
but Vincent’s death destroyed him.
事实上 他在文森特的最后时日里
He had actually been with him a whole day
整天陪着他 但文森特坚持让他用这段时间
at the end, but Vincent insisted they use the time
来讨论人生 而不是死亡
to discuss life not death.
而且也没有遗书 所以这一直是一个谜
And, no suicide note either, so it stayed a mystery.
西奥一直在问着为什么
And, Theo ‘just keep asking why’?
在我们埋葬文森特的六个月之后 西奥也去世了
Six months after we buried Vincent, Theo was dead too.

Wow, the two of them.
所以文森特究竟是怎么死的
So how did Vincent die?
他在奥维镇的田野上开枪自杀
He shot himself in the fields above Auvers
就在他的画架旁 他到生命的最后还在继续着他热爱的绘画
by his easel doing what he loved painting to the end.

西奥认为他的不幸可以追溯到童年时代
Theo thought his unhappiness went right back to childhood.

He tried so hard to fit into his family.
但是他从未成功过
But, he never succeeded in this.
文森特告诉我他是家里最年长的 但不是第一个孩子
Vincent told me he was the oldest but Not The first.
还有一个文森特 他那胎死腹中的哥哥
There was another Vincent, a stillborn older brother:.
他认为那个孩子是完美的文森特
He thought that boy was the perfect Vincent
而自己永远不可能得到妈妈的重视和疼爱
that he could never measure up to in his mother’s eyes.
他挣扎着活出父母想要的样子
He struggled to be what they wanted him to be.
他加入了叔叔的美术经销商
He joined his uncle’s art dealership
但被无情地赶走了
and was thrown out in disgrace.
他尝试过父亲的职业 牧师
He tried for his father’s profession, the church,
但牧师考试对他来说太困难了
but the pastor exams were too hard for him,
所以他开始了卑微的传教士工作
so he took a job as a lowly missionary.
但即使是这种工作 他还是被解雇了
He managed to get sacked even from that.
又是一条死路
Yet another dead end.
但是 西奥说自己相信他
But, Theo says he believes in him
如果文森特为自己而战的话
and that if Vincent will fight for himself,
西奥会和他一同作战
he will fight alongside him.

And, that was it.
文森特在二十八岁的时候第一次拿起画笔
Vincent picks up a brush for the first time at 28,
在西奥的支持下 没有什么能阻挡他对绘画的追求了
and with Theo’s support, there is no stopping him.

So what happened then?

Paris happened.
然后毫无疑问 他来了这里
He came here of course.

For many artists, Paris is a final destination

but not for him.

It was a stopover to learn what he needed to learn,
学成之后就去探索属于他自己的路了
and then he was off in search of his own path.

It’s the kindest thing.

I saw him once more after two years.

He was calmer, more assured.

And, I thought this is a man whose story will end well.

His star finally rising, his revolution won.

So think how shocking it was to be standing
就站在文森特棺材旁边是有多震惊
over Vincent’s coffin just six weeks later.
真令人难过
So sad.
对许多人来说 他献身艺术了
For many he died a martyr for art,
但在我看来 这有点怪
but for me, it seems odd.

Why?

In only eight years, he had traveled

from amateur to an artist of influence, unbelievable.

Monet declared him the shining star

of the Independent Artist’s Fair.
他的医生说他已经康复了
And, he was cured according to his doctor,
加歇医生 他在奥维尔照顾文森特
Dr. Gachet who had looked after Vincent in Auvers.
我在葬礼上看到他
I met him at the funeral.
只有几个巴黎的艺术家来了 还有他
There were just a few artists from Paris and him.
我还以为他是文森特的弟弟
I could’ve thought he was Vincent’s brother.
他在葬礼上致悼词
He was the one who made the speech,
致悼词的时候他一直在哭
and he cried all the way through it.

And, an hour later he was running around taking Vincent’s
把文森特最好的画作从墙上取下来 就好像是他自己的一样
best paintings off the wall as if they were his.
把这些画作为文森特的治疗费
And, they were, his fee, for treating Vincent.
这个医生能得到西奥的全部信任 看起来很奇怪
It seemed odd that the doctor had Theo’s full confidence.

I understand he’s still close to the Van Gogh family.
