kill the fatted calf指为某人举行盛大的欢迎仪式，如欢迎某人回家。“钦定版”《圣经》的《路加福音》（Luke ）第15章第23－24节中记载了耶稣所讲的一则“浪子回头”的寓言，kill the fatted calf这一表达即源自于此：

“And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.”

“把那肥牛犊牵来宰了，我们可以吃喝快乐。因为我这个儿子，是死而复活，失而又得的。”

kill the goose that laid the golden eggs指杀鸡取卵、自断财路。该表达出自古代的一则寓言。相传有个农夫有一只会下金蛋的鹅。由于太过贪婪，农夫决定把鹅杀了，一次性把所有的蛋取出来。结果自然是这只被杀死的鹅再也不能下蛋了。
