我算是在奶奶身边长大的
I basically grew up all with my grandma.
我不喜欢继父
I didn’t get along with my step dad,
只要遇到什么不顺心的事 我就去找我奶奶
so when there was a problem, I would stay with my Grandma.
或者我们全都去奶奶家
Or we would all stay with my Grandma.
我奶奶非常支持我
My Grandma was always extremely supportive.
支持得我妈和我姐姐都嫌烦了
To the point of being very annoying to my mom and my sister.
对她而言 我就是无所不能的金童
To her, I was the Golden Boy that could do anything.
她也让我觉得我能做成任何事
She made me feel like I could do anything.
当她说”你会取得成功”的时候
When she said: ‘You’re going to be a success’,
那语气不像随便说说
it wasn’t like she was just saying it.
像是在阐述事实
It was like, a fact.
就好像我肯定会成功 板上钉钉了
Like, that was going to happen. That was that.

《苍穹》的灵感来源于我的侄女
Aether was based around my niece.
她让我想起了我自己
She reminded me of me,
她不喜欢和别的小孩一起玩
because she didn’t like playing with other kids.
她喜欢自己玩 喜欢自己四处探索
She liked to do things by herself. And explore by herself.
她想象力非常丰富 还很喜欢怪物
She was very imaginative. And she really liked monsters.
这让我回想起小时候
That whole thing brought me back to when I was little.
我就想 如果能制♥作♥一部让别人
And I thought: how cool would it be to make a game
游历我六七岁时的
that could put other people
幻想世界的游戏 该有多酷
inside my mind when I was 5, 6, 7?
于是我做了《苍穹》
And that was ‘Aether’.
苍穹
在一头怪兽背上有一个小孩
So this kid gets on the back of a monster.
怪兽驮着他在太空里游走
And the monster goes around in space.
他必须要去探索其它的星球
And he gets explores all these other planets,
因为他在地球上无亲无故
because he can’t connect to anybody on earth.
所以他要去别的星球找朋友
So he goes to find friends.
我不会接近任何东西 他们都觉得我傻
我再也不回家了
但这些星球上都住满了各种
But all these other planets are inhabited
或奇怪 或悲伤 或紧张的生物
with these kind of weird or sad or nervous creatures.
所以他就试着帮助这些生物解决困难
And he goes and tries to solve their problems.
但他解决了困难 这些生物并不会高兴起来
He solves the problems but they don’t become happy.
所以他就在各个星球之间穿梭
And he keeps going around all these different planets.
他每解决一个问题 地球就会缩小一点
But each time he solves a problem, the Earth gets smaller.
等他再回去的时候
And then when he comes back to Earth,
地球已经小得一碰就碎了
it’s so small that when he touches it it breaks.
所以他就迷失在太空里了
And he’s lost in space.
这游戏想传达的信息是
It was about the idea of…
做一个有创造力的小孩非常酷
It’s really cool to be a creative kid.
猴子
猴子
能做许多有想象力的事
And it’s cool to do all that stuff.
我把我的心脏变成了怪兽
但也要面对自我封闭的风险
But there’s dangers of isolating,
以及被各种事物搅得心神不宁的可能
and becoming obsessed with things.
还有可能得恐惧症
And having phobias.
每一颗星球都代表了我小时候的一种恐惧症
Each of those planets was a phobia of mine when I was little.
我小时候上♥床♥睡觉前 非常害怕这些东西
And when I was little, before bed, I would obsess about these things.
我在哭 因为我觉得有头怪兽在刺我的肚子
因为我还以为我能克服这些恐惧
Because I thought I’d be able to fix them.
但到最后 事情总是变得更糟
But in the end, I would just make them worse.
细菌钻到他身体里 然后他死了
他们就是不肯消停
They wouldn’t be fixed.
但我是如此害怕他们
But I’d be so obsessed with them
以至于我第二天在学校闹胃疼 不得不回家
the next day I’d have stomach aches and need to go home.

A lot of the imagery in stuff that I pulled from,
现在我都非常非常喜欢
I’m still very very very happy with.
一个人好伤心
有时候我肚子疼
这游戏很好地表达了我小时候的感受
To me it speaks perfectly of how I felt when I was little.
我玩游戏时的感觉
When I play that game,
与我记忆中小时候的感觉一模一样
that’s exactly how I remember it feeling.
现在想来还是很欢乐
Still very happy with it.
游戏做好没多久 我奶奶就去世了
Shortly after that, my grandma passed away.
她有一个专门保存我画的画的箱子
And she had a box of my drawings that she saved,
我小时候的画
when I was little.
我从中找到了那幅
That’s when I found this picture
我在太空中飘浮的画
that I had drawn of me in space. Floating.
上面写着
And it says …
这是漂在太空中的埃德蒙 太空是我的朋友
This is Edmund floating in space. And my friend too is space…
之类的话
Or something like that.
太空就是我的朋友 我也是我的朋友
‘Space is my friend. And my friend too is me.’
我还是先理清楚吧
I should break that out.
这个箱子里的画证实了我的话
It was validating to find that box.
看到这些画时我就想感叹 哇
And see those things and be like: Wow.
这和游戏里简直一样
This is just like the game.

刚开始的时候我记得非常清楚
I have a very precise story of the exact moment where it started.
我当时四岁
I was four.
又是1988年的圣诞节
It was Christmas, 1988.
作为圣诞礼物 我收到了台任天堂红白机
And for Christmas I got a Nintendo Entertainment System
附带了《马里奥》《塞尔达传说》
with ‘Mario’, ‘Zelda’
以及《俄♥罗♥斯♥方块》
and ‘Tetris’.
太完美了 简直就是电子游戏三巨头
Which is perfect. The ‘Trifecta’ of video games.
今天估计不可能再有更强的经典组合了
To this day, you can’t really get a better three games together.

It was clear at that moment

that this is what I wanted to do with my life.

There was never any doubt about it. I wanted to make games.

What that entailed wasn’t always clear.

It just seems like: ‘Oh, you come up with ideas’

‘and then you have a game. It’s awesome.’

So this is the game me and my Dad made back in 1993.
素材是我拿Kid Pix画的
Based on art I would make in ‘Kid Pix’.
他把这些画收集起来
He would take that,
做成这种简单的”找找看”小游戏
and turn it into these simple ‘Find the Object’ games.
所以经常有时候我从学校放学回来
So I would come back from school every now and then,
这游戏就又多了几个新的关卡
and there will be these new levels added to the game
用的就是我前几天的作品
based on stuff I made in the days before.
一开始这几关只是
At first, they were just these
“沃尔多在哪里”那种形式的谜题
really simple ‘Where’s Waldo’ ask things.

Where’s the letter ‘V’?

Oh, there it is.
太抽象了
It’s so completely abstract.
因为全是我画的 所以也没什么说法
Because it’s all my art. And it made no sense.

That I made for myself. It’s the stupidest thing.

It’s just patterns that I designed.
让其快速地黑白变换
And I made it invert the colors.
速度非常快 就像闪屏那样
Really really quickly to give them a flicker.
你选择好图案 再选择想要的闪烁速度
You pick your pattern and the number of flashes you want.
然后你就可以把脸贴到屏幕上
And then you’re supposed to do is to stick your face in it,
盯着屏幕看
and stare at it.

And I swear to God, you start to see stuff.

So, the way that am I approaching design
和方法都是注重体验的
in this case, is really kind of experiential.

what’s gonna be happening?
这和拍电影时
Not quite in the same way
使用的方法不尽一致 但也差距不大
that you think of it in a movie, but sort of.

You have to put your mind in the viewpoint of the player,
