齐天 [Equal to Heaven]

English #1 – Heaven’s Equal

(Your mountain will be destroyed
Your immortal heart will be killed
They say this is my fate)

The sun and moon revolve time and again
Whose commands are as supreme as Heaven’s
and can settle all the quarrels in the world?
Love and hate are intertwined into a single thread
I can’t escape from your (Buddha’s) fingertips
and into the vastness of the open sky

I question everything about life, death, and karma
Why was I born?
Why have you brought me into being, yet leave me with no answers?
I am simply told to become a buddha, right here, right now
Would the world then have demons no more?
Who will tell me?!
Wind and sand block out the sun and turn the whole world brown
Above Heaven’s palace
The moon looks just the same as it does from my home mountain
Victorious battles bring fame, as well as attacks and ambushes from all sides

You disregard the rules of a warrior, and I struggle to deflect every arrow from the dark

So many dawns and dusks have passed unseen
I push towards the ending, and I push towards the truth, one step after another
yet there is still nothing in sight
other than the fragrance of peach blossoms that lingers in my dreams
Even the strongest resolve falters in the face of deception
The black-and-white truth awaits the dawn
Will I still have a chance to show my true self?
Blades are unsheathed
Sculptures crumble and fall
The lady’s adornments loosen and fly about as they hasten away

There is no way to turn back
The only thing that remains throughout time and space is my staff
Why do victories end in loneliness?
Whom does the wind gossip about in my dreams?
I salute the enemy, but I will never concede
I will flatten Heaven’s palace and fight above mountains and canyons
Until there is no one left in sight
Am I young, hot-headed, and have with no room for regrets?
Who can give me something to believe in?
Spring is not yet over, and the moon illuminates us
I would like to learn from you

Too bad the wind is picking up, and the timing is all wrong
The breaking of dawn is here
The restraining circlet is not yet ready
I can still smile

Love, hatred, worry, and fear cloud my eyes
Claps of thunders may shake the world
but they can’t constrain me
Millions of soldiers maneuver and swarm around me
yet I will never surrender
Victory and defeat are not up to you to decide
My staff turns Heaven upside down
Who says men’s fates are set by Heaven, I say Heaven’s fate is decided by men’s hearts
I want this mountain to be cut through by the road that leads to this place
I want this river to divert away from my journey home
I want heaven and earth to yield and make room for me
The tip of my staff breaks the mountains and cracks the earth
Your smile heals the world and covers it with the colors of dusk
I have cried, laughed, loved, hated, obsessed, and criticized
There is nothing I can’t let go of
I want these absurd rules
to end like a farce

In this world, even a stone-cold heart can’t determine what is right and wrong
Emptiness is to accept and float in the endless cycles of life
Tides rise and fall
After all, breaking free from the entanglement of karma
makes me
The Great Sage, Heaven’s Equal

(I have been in this world
I have fought my battles
I don’t care how this ends
I am the Great Sage, Heaven’s Equal
Sun Wu Kong)

English #2 – Qi Tian

《Qi Tian》
(the Great Sage Equal to Heaven)
Theme Song of the Movie “Wu Kong”
Composer: Hua Chenyu
Lyricists: Ding Yanxue, Jin Hezai, Fang Hao
Arranger: Bernard Zheng

Sun and moon are recurring
Who has commanded Qi Tian Qi Tian
To let go of gratitude and grudges?

Love and hate strung together
Cannot escape from the fingertips
Fingertips (of Buddha)
Under the vast sky

May I ask: What are life, death, or karma?
Wherefore was I born?
Why have you brought me forth
Yet will not answer my doubts?
You said: “Become a Buddha at this instant”
If I become a Buddha
Will there be no demons in this world?
Who can tell me?

Look, the sandstorm blocked the sun
and enveloped the world in dust
The moon above Heaven’s Palace
was no different from that above Mount Huaguo
I won my first battle with glory and fame
Yet you tried to catch me with inescapable nets
You won without honor
I could not dodge hidden arrows
So many daybreaks had slipped away unnoticed
The ending and truth remained elusive
as I trod forward
Fragrance of peach blossoms
persisted in my dreams
Yet it could not resist your trickery
The truth of black and white
was waiting for the daybreak
Could it directly write down
your natural talent (for trickery)?
Daggers and blades out of sheath
Dragons and phoenixes collapsed as kylins fell
Flight of jade steps shattered
at the swing of my golden cudgel (Qi Tian’s weapon)
There was no chance for regret
Over a thousand years and in this universe
All that is left is my golden cudgel
Why had my victories ended in loneliness?
Whose name was whispered by the wind in my dreams
I said, “Excuse me,” but there was no way I would admit defeat
Treading across the Southern Heaven
I swore upon mountains and rivers
Till the end of the world

Who was young and wild?
Who could give me a belief?
Spring had not ended
The moon was shining
I wanted to be there
Unfortunately the wind blew early
I missed my chance
The dawn was breaking
The constricting headband had not been forged
I could still smile

Love, hate, worries and fear fogged my eyes
Thunders of thousands of soldiers shook the world
But they still could not confine me
Millions of heavenly warriors advanced and spread
Don’t even think about my surrender
You cannot decide the victor of this battle
The Heaven’s Palace was turned upside down with one swing of my cudgel
To hell with fate
I choose my own destiny
I want these mountains to move away from my inroads
I want these waters to part to make way for my returning path
I want heaven and earth to yield to me
The world shattered at the tip of my cudgel
You picked up a flower with a smile
The sky was filled with dusk clouds
I cried, laughed, loved, hated,
obsessed and went mad
What were left that I could not let go of?
I want these absurd rules
to end as a farce

One day, under heaven and earth
The stone heart (of Qi Tian) was caught in a paradox
The so-called “nothingness” is the exile at
the portal where we came from
Tide rises and falls
It occurred that “nothingness”
is the so-called “Great Sage Equal to Heaven”

Author’s comments:
Stone heart: Wu Kong’s heart because Wu Kong was born from stone.

The song title Wu Kong is the name of the monkey king. It actually means to meditate on the meaning of emptiness (a buddhist concept of nothingness on the mind).

The last part of the song answered:
It occurred that “nothingness”
is the so-called “Great Sage Equal to Heaven”

So this is the author’s understanding of what it means by “Emptiness”
