It’s a story quilt. It’s meant to be read.
当我还是个小姑娘的时候…
When I was a little girl…
我的Pauline姑姑就这条喜被
… my Aunt Pauline would tell me
the story from the quilt.
给我讲了曾祖母是如何遇见幸福的故事.
How my great-grandparents met.
在奴隶制行将结束的时候，她还是个年轻的女子.
My great-grandmother was just a young woman
when slavery was ending.
当她终于获得自♥由♥，
她便决定启程去寻找…
And when she was finally free,
she set out to look for her parents…
多年前将她卖♥♥给奴隶主的父母.
… who had been sold off years before.
在她行走数月后的一天…
One day…
她看到在篱笆上…
… after many months of travel, she saw a crow…
站着一只乌鸦.
… sitting on a fence.
有一种力量在指引着她——”去跟随乌鸦看看吧.”
Something told her, “Follow that crow.”
那只乌鸦将她引领到
一个在空地上干活的年轻人那儿
The crow led her to a young man
working his acres…
此时我的曾祖母终于知道…
… and my great-grandmother,
she knew in her heart…
自己心有所属了.
… that she was supposed to stop right there.
能在找寻父母的途中碰到这个男人…
It seems that the search for her parents
had led her to the man…
注定是上天成全了他们.
… God had intended for her to marry.
每天晚上，我都会听Pauline姑姑讲这个故事.
Every night, I’d listen to my Aunt Pauline
tell that story.
我当时就在想:
And I’d think to myself:
“好吧, 如果能够碰到乌鸦，
我会紧盯着它.
“Okay, I’m gonna keep my eyes out
for that crow.
“总有一天, 它会带我找到真爱的.”
“One day, he’ll lead me to my own true love.”
在”大萧条”期间,
我们拿不出钱来购置鞋子和课本
During the Depression, we had no money…
所以，Pauline姑姑将那床喜被…
… to pay for shoes or schoolbooks,
so my Aunt Pauline sold off the quilt…
卖♥♥给了她的雇主.
… to the woman she worked for.
那个女人给了Pauline姑姑12美元,
并且将”喜被”挂在了自家墙上.
The woman paid Aunt Pauline $12,
and hung our quilt on her wall.
