hog (go the whole hog )干到底
go the whole hog指“彻底地干、干到底”。如：
We’ve decorated the living room ― why don’t we go the whole hog and paint the hall and stairs as well?
既然我们已经装饰了客厅，为什么不干彻底些，把大厅和楼梯也漆一下？
关于这一习惯用语的来源有两种说法。一种认为，17世纪时，英格兰称先令（shilling）为hog，但当时1 hog远远比现在1先令所等值的5便士值钱许多。所以，to go the whole hog即形容一次性大肆挥霍。另一说法认为它出自英国诗人威廉·柯珀（William Cowper，1731—1800）的诗作。
