秋天的时候，河水退下
In the fall, the river will ice up when fully flooded.
并会被雪压在下面
After snow falls, the water will drain…
冰会裂开一条缝
and the ice will be forced down by the snow.
水通过这条缝在雪下流淌
A crack will develop through which the water will flow under the snow…
这水永不会结冰
and this water will never freeze.

如果你问我勤奋与坚持不懈是不是最重要的东西
If you ask me, industry and perseverance is top of the agenda.
我怀疑不是所有人都会同意
I doubt if anyone would agree.
但我们一致觉得对于猎人来说贪婪是最坏的品质
But we all agree that greed is the trapper’s worst quality…
我和朋友们都很鄙视贪婪
which I and my friends despise.
我可以告诉你
I can tell you that.
这是肯定的
That’s for sure.
不计代价，就为挣点儿小钱
Making a few coins at any price.
一直在设陷阱直到
Setting up traps up until–
融雪的时候……
up until the thaw…
就算那时捕到的都是怀孕的母兽
even when all you get are pregnant females.
现在设陷阱实在太早了
Arming traps too early.
刚进入十月几天而已
It’s only a few days into October,
但是有人已经在设陷阱了
but that guy is already arming traps.
人们告诉他紫貂的皮毛还未长好，还是黑的
They tell him the sable isn’t coming out properly yet. It’s black.
他说“那又如何?”
“So what?” the guy would say.
“确实抓来只能换小钱，但是也是落在我的口袋里，
“Only a couple of coins, that’s true, but in my pocket.
不然紫貂就跑到别人的地盘去了”
Otherwise the sable will run to someone else’s territory.”
我们很看不起这样的猎人
We despise this kind of trapper.
根纳季正在设陷阱…
Here, Gennady builds one of his traps…
多年来，它一直都用这个简单的方法
in the same simple manner they have been built for ages.

这是祖父教的，谁发明的早就不记得了
Grandfather’s traps– whoever invented them, his name is long forgotten.
那么多世纪过去了，我们还在用这个方法……
So many centuries have passed, but we still use them…
不能发明一些新点子
unable to invent something new.
四月的天气很暖，阳光充足……
It is April, and the weather is warm, plenty of daylight…
蚊子还没有出来
the mosquitoes aren’t out yet–
对猎人来说是好时机
time for trappers.
远离捕猎区又想靠捕猎来赚点钱的人们会来这里
Those living off trapping and wanting to earn a bit to go out to the woods.
他们在针叶林里要待上四周时间
They will go into the taiga for nearly four weeks…
安置他们的生活，储存食物等等
setting up their properties, storing food and suchlike.
有些人会设koolyomka陷阱
Some will make new koolyomka traps.
其他人则会在针叶林里开出新的道路
Others will drive new paths through the taiga.
总而言之，大家都出来工作
In short, folks are out working.

我会在秋天来完成这个
I will come in the fall and finish it.
将是个不错的koolyomka陷阱
It’ll be a proper koolyomka trap, all right,
现在只是春天的一点准备工作
while now it’s just a spring job.

so I need to make a thousand of these, give or take.

so he can find it at the beginning of the hunting season.

I came north in 1970 and was immediately employed.

They told me to get ready.

They gave me traps, advanced some money, issued a gun.

And me and my partner– we were both 20– boarded a chopper.

They showed us our site and just left us there.

We didn’t have a radio. We didn’t have anything.

They promised to bring some food by New Year’s Eve…
炉子和其他东西
a stove and some other stuff.
我们当时什么都没有
We didn’t have anything.
不知怎么伙伴受不了这种情况
My partner somehow didn’t prove equal to the challenge.
于是剩我一个
I was left alone.
后来他们没在除夕前按约定送来东西
They didn’t bring anything at the promised time.
事情就是这样发生的，但毕竟只是按季节坐飞机来这里
Well, things happen. It’s aviation after all.
说来话长，但我还是活下来了，有趣吧
It’s a long story, but I survived– interestingly enough.
这不像电视里演的那些岛，大家都是英雄……
It was not like that island on TV where they’re all heroes…
一起捕猎，一起分螃蟹 蝎子等
and catch and share crabs or scorpions.
我呢，一直挣扎求生……
Me, I was really struggling for dear life…
因为下雪了我还没有冬衣
because snow fell and I had no winter clothes.
打猎棚里根本没有炉子，只有一些干面包可以吃
There was no stove in the hut. Just bread rusk to eat.
我很幸运有一只忠诚的狗，它帮我找到食物
I was lucky to have a good dog. She really fed me.
我本觉得自己是一个老道的季节性猎人
I thought I was a hell of a seasoned trapper.
但真干起来，我发现自己是个十足的初学者
But when it really came down to it, it turned out I was a complete novice.
我的首个捕猎季
That was my initial season.
8月5号♥飞来这里，2月20号♥被带回去
I was flown in on August 5 and brought back on February 20–

some season.

Well, matter of fact, I don’t think I blew it.
猎人们返回村庄
The hunters return to the village.
这里在融雪之前，孩子们可以享受到最后一次滑冰
Here, the kids enjoy a last chance at ice-skating before the thaw.

May 1 marks a big day for Russia.
是他们传统的劳动节，并且标志着冬天的结束
It is their traditional Labor Day and marks the end of the winter.
冬天被象征性地烧掉
Winter is burnt in effigy.

An entire landscape starts to move north…

towards the Arctic Ocean.

春天是做独木舟的时候
Spring is the time to build dugout canoes.
这位根纳季先生
This man, Gennady Tiganov…
是西伯利亚地区的克季河当地人
belongs to the Ket native population of this part of Siberia.
他是目前仅剩的可以制♥作♥独木舟的专家
He is their last remaining expert boat builder.
所用的工具和技巧都是传统的
Tools and techniques being used are all traditional.

It is essential to hollow out the precise amount and no more.

Markings point out the positions of dowels,

which will be driven into the hull.

The nets have been out overnight…
第二天早上，周围已都结成冰
and, by morning, ice has formed around them.
但这是一年中捕捉梭子鱼和其他鱼类的好时机。
But it’s a good time of year for catching pike and other fish.
