goad (rhymes with road) In Old English, a “gad” was “a long stick with a pointed end, used for prodding animals.” The word “goad” which comes from this root has a more general meaning—“to urge” or “to prod,” but it retains some of its negative connotation. It can be used as a noun or a verb.
