To My Sick Horse
You have been ridden long
Through cold, deep mountain pass.
In dust you toil along,
Sick at year’s end, alas!
Is your coat not the same
As others? Meek till now,
You’re dearer than your frame.
Can I not be moved? How?
“To My Sick Horse” is a poem written by Du Fu, a great poet of the Tang Dynasty, when he was in Qinzhou in the second year of Emperor Su’s reign (759). The poem expresses the author’s own despondent state of mind in his old age by chanting about the sick horse, which is “old and exhausted”. It has the author’s own shadow in it.
