What the dickens do you think you’re doing here?中的dickens与作家查尔斯·狄更斯（Charles Dickens）没有丝毫关联。dickens一词的这种用法可见于莎士比亚的戏剧《温莎的风流娘们》（The Merry Wives of Windsor ）第3幕第2场：
“I cannot tell what the dickens his name is.”
“我总记不起（把他送给我丈夫的）那个人叫什么名字。” (5)
其中，dickens是devil（见鬼了）的委婉语，用在此处起到加强语气的作用。
