Cynical 一词源自古希腊哲学流派犬儒主义(Cynicism)。该主义主张以追求普遍的善为人生之目的,为此必须抛弃一切物质享受和感官快乐。之所以称其为“犬儒”,一是由于其创始人是在雅典一个名叫“快犬”的运动场讲学;二是由于其信徒生活艰难,在大街上讲学时衣食简陋,随遇而安,形同乞丐, 被人讥为犬。
虽然早期的犬儒主义者是根据自身的道德原则去蔑视世俗的观念,但后期的犬儒主义者尽管依旧蔑视世俗的观念,但却丧失了作为准绳的道德原则,形成了一种玩世不恭的愤世嫉俗。
因此到了17世纪60年代后,cynical 就被用来形容人“愤世嫉俗的、不信世间有真诚善意的”以及对人性或动机“怀疑的、悲观的”,也就是认为人们都是受私利或不道德的欲望驱使的,不相信人类真有所谓诚实正直、热情善良等高尚品质,比如:
