在西方历史中人们通常将通奸（ adultery ）视为犯罪，并制定了严格的惩罚措施。在古罗马，女子通奸将被没收一半的嫁妆和三分之一的财产，放逐至小岛，永远不得再结婚。男人发现老婆与人通奸，必须告发并与其离婚，否则将受到严惩。在经典名著《红字》中，女主人公因为与人偷情生子，而被宗教法庭判处终身佩戴一个象征“通奸”的红色 A 字。
