caustic (CAW stik) From the Greek word meaning “to burn,” this adjec-tive means “biting or cuttingly sarcastic.” Caustic comments really sting on an emotional level. The noun “causticity” is pretty much only used in scientific writing.
- “If I were you, I’d put a paper bag over my head before going out with that haircut,” said Richard caustically. “But don’t worry; it will grow.”
