A government must endeavour to keep the electorate happy, but no one can be all things to all people.
政府必须努力讨好选民，但不可能取悦所有人。
如其他我们所熟悉的短语一样，该短语也源自《圣经》。在《新约·哥林多前书》第1节中，圣保罗说道：
“I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.”
“向什么样的人，我就做什么样的人。无论如何，总要救些人。”
短语中有时用people取代men，是为了避免使用带有性别歧视的语言。
