天宁岛
第二天清早,天宁岛上的空勤人员被一阵噪音吵醒了
The next morning,the aircrew on Tinian woke to a disturbing sound,
又有一架B29轰炸机在跑道上坠毁了
once again a B.29 had crashed on the runway.
这次坠机警醒了武器专家帕森斯
The crash alarmed Parsons,the weapons specialist.
今天就要行动
lt was the day of the mission,
他们计划将全副武装的炸♥弹♥安装到飞机上
and they were planning to load the bomb on to the plane,fully armed.
炸♥弹♥的引爆机制是使用火♥药♥
The bomb’s firing mechanism used gunpowder
迫使两个分隔开的铀相撞
to force two separate pieces of uranium together,
造成一系列的核反应
to start a nuclear reaction.
帕森斯担心一旦战机起飞时坠毁
Parsons’ worry was that if the plane crashed on take off,
就会触发引爆机制
the firing mechanism would be triggered,
整个天宁岛都会被炸毁
and they would blow up the whole island.
于是在未经授权下，他更改了计划
So,without authorisation,he changed the plan.
我认为在我们飞离天宁岛后
l think it’s better l load the powder charges into the gun barrel
由我来将火♥药♥装入炮筒
after we’ve cleared the island.

Nope.

But l’ve got all day and night to learn.

We don’t take off till 02:00.There’s time.

lf Parsons got it wrong,
整个行动将更危险
there was a serious risk the whole mission,

and the bomb,would be wasted.

Parsons sat in that airplane for several hours,

rehearsing exactly what he was going to have to do,

He made it,this time is when he made his detailed check.off list.

And he practised that for half a day,

and his hands were beaten up from handling this thing.

Looks like we’ll be bombing the Japs with dirty hands!
蒂贝茨作了个自己的决定
Paul Tibbets had reached a decision of his own:
身为指挥官，他也要去驾驶战机
as commanding officer,he was also planning to pilot the strike plane.
作为传统，他为战机起名
As was traditional,he chose a name for it.
我说我想以母亲的名字命名
l said,l’d like to name it after my mother.
她叫艾诺拉·盖伊
Her name was Enola Gay,
我清楚世上只此一架B29战机
and l know that there’ll never be another B.29,
不会有另外一架飞机
l don’t think there’ll be an airplane flying,
也叫做“艾诺拉·盖伊”号♥
that will have the name Enola Gay on it.
而这架战机的名字将垂名青史
l think the airplane will go down in history,
我希望她为我带来好运
and l want it to be with a good omen.

Tibbets decision came as a shock to Captain Bob Lewis.

He had always flown that plane,

and assumed he would be the pilot.

What’s going on?

Number one,it’s not your airplane,

it belongs to United States Air Corps,

and number two,l’m the organisation commander,
我可以对任何一架战机做任何事情，包括你的！
l can do anything l want with any one of those airplanes,including yours!
他没有作声，这就是唯一的争论
He shut up.That was the only discussion.

对大部分广岛居民而言
For most citizens of Hiroshima,
八月五日是平静的一天
5th August was uneventful.
一天快结束后，等待他们的是
As the day closed,people prepared themselves
更多的空袭♥警♥报和无眠的夜晚
for more air raid sirens,and more disturbed sleep.
飞田医生在繁忙的一天后仍然值班
Dr Hida was still on duty after a busy day.
他清楚地记得8月5日这一天
He remembers the 5th quite clearly.
我晚上八点左右回到医院
l returned to the hospital around 8 pm.
值晚班的一位军官前来告诉我
An officer on night shift came and told me
有四位满洲客人来到广岛
that four guests from Manchuria were in Hiroshima.
他们是高级军医
They were high.ranking army doctors.
由我来负责招待他们
l was told to look after them.
最后他们都睡下了，我就睡在他们边上
Eventually l put everybody to bed,and then l lay down beside them.
然后在半夜的时候
Then,in the middle of the night,
村里一位老人骑车来找我
an old man from the village come on his bicycle to see me.
快起来，我的孙女中暑了
他住的地方没有医生
There weren’t any doctors where he lived,
医生都上了前线
they were all at the Front.
我想不到别的方法，唯有跟他走
Thinking it couldn’t be helped,l went with him,
那时正值半夜
in the middle of the night.
我喝得很醉
l was very drunk.
当时没有车辆
There were no cars at that time,
我就坐在老人的单车后面
and so l sat on the back of the old man’s bicycle.
我就是这样保住命的
That is how l survived.

Okay,there are three planes involved in the mission.

That night,in the last minutes before departure,

there was a final briefing for all the crews who were heading to Hiroshima.

That evening,when l came out the mess hall,

the Flight Surgeon gave me the pills.

He told me what they were.
他说，我希望你们用不着，但万一你们用了
l hope you don’t need them,but,he said,if you do,
那是氰化物
they’re cyanide.
他说若有需要，团队每人一颗
He said,here,if you need them,one for each man of the crew.
你们服用后什么都不会感觉到
He said,you’ll never know anything,
六分钟内就会死去
within six minutes,you’re gone.
你们不会感觉到任何不同，没有任何感觉
You never feel anything different,you never feel a thing.
在登机前我将这件事
And l told the guys outside the airplane,
告诉了站在飞机外的其他队员
before we climbed up,
如果你们需要，我会给你们一颗
l’ll give any one of you the pill,if you want the pill.
大家都没说什么
And no one said anything,
只有帕森斯上尉说想要一颗
but Captain Parsons,he said,l’d like to have one.

And l understood his position,
他比任何人都清楚炸♥弹♥的技术构造
because he knew more technical stuff about that bomb than anybody.

When we got to the Enola Gay,
就收到第一个大惊喜
that was our first big surprise,because we had,
飞机周围亮着灯光
there were lights all over the place,
这和我们参与过的其他飞行任务都不同
And this was not like any mission we’d ever flown.
这次就像好莱坞电影首映
You know,this was like a Hollywood premiere!
摄影师和拍摄队伍都被召来
Photographers and film crew had been ordered
记录这次具有历史性的任务
to record the historic mission.
我们登上战机，启动引擎
We had climbed into the airplanes,in order to start the engines,
四周全是人，还有闪光灯
and there were people all around,there were clegg lights right there,
就放在二号♥引擎前面
right in front of the number two engine.
对此我什么也做不了
And l couldn’t do anything with that thing there,
唯有打开窗，探出头，说道：向后退！
so l opened the window,stuck my head out,l said,stand back!
让开
Move out of the way!
我就这样挥着手，然后有人叫道…
But l just waved my hand like that,and some guy said,
向我们挥挥手
wave at us!
我照做了，就拍了这张照片
So l waved,and that’s what you got.
这是新的一天，这是新的一个早晨
lt was another day,it was another morning up.
就是这样
And that was it.

The bomb weighed more than four tons,

making take off even more dangerous than usual.
