Farewell by Southern Riverside
By Southern Riverside we bid dreary goodbye;
Autumn seems desolate to hear the west wind sigh.
My heart would break each time you look back to the shore.
Go on before and don’t turn your head any more!
“Farewell by Southern Riverside” is a five-line poem written by Bai Juyi, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. In the poem, the poet depicts the sentimental details of the farewell process and expresses the deep feelings of parting with a bleak landscape. As the poem is often written about the farewell at Nanpu, “Nanpu” has become a synonym for the place of farewell.
