这头母牛只有跟上队伍才有安全
The cow is only safe if she can keep up.

The young bull elephant is in no hurry,

Nor does he care where he’ll be when nightfall descends.

Just when the lions think they’re free of the elephant,
它回来了 悠哉游哉地穿过狮子们 休息的地方
He’s back, strolling right through the lions’ rest stop.
大象不喜欢狮子
Elephants don’t like lions.
这是一个很古老的自然法则
It’s a very old law of nature.
不过 这头公像一门心思地 想要到沙洲去
But the bull is more intent on the sandbar
而不是跟狮子们作对 至少 现在不
Than taking on the pride, at least for now.
好像是要给狮子点脸色看看
As if to make his point,
它又回来了 悠哉游哉地穿过 狮子们休息的地方
He strolls right back through the rest stop.
它知道 它们拿它是没有办法的
He knows there’s nothing they can do.
马拉马拉的高地

It’s also a safer place for them to bed down for the night.
小猎豹还得参加它们的第一次捕猎行动
The cubs have yet to make their first kill,
不过它们现在自己闹来闹去地练
But they have each other to practice their moves on.
这样的嬉戏并没有讨得它们母亲的欢心
All this playing doesn’t amuse their mother.
轻轻地咬一下 它们又变得懂规矩了
A quick nip puts them in order…
也许就这么一会儿吧
If only for a moment.
随着日落时分的临近
With sundown approaching,
鬣狗妈妈该动身了
It’s time for the hyena mom to get moving.

Her cubs have drunk their fill.

She needs to restore her milk supply with a good feed.
幼崽照例要留下来
The cubs will stay behind.

They know the routine.

And, besides, after feeding so much today,

All they’ll want to do is sleep.
牛群已经到达安全的草原地带
The herd has reached the safety of the grassland…
除了怀孕的母牛 大家都到了
All but the pregnant cow.
它还落在后面
She’s still lagging behind
必须使出全身的力气才能赶上去
And must draw on all her reserves to catch up.
现在是六点半 正是非洲灌木草原发生变化的时候
It’s half past six — a time of change in the bush.
太阳正在下山
The sun is now setting.
猎豹将会在明天继续上捕猎课
The cheetahs will continue their hunting lessons tomorrow.
犀牛还不想安下心来
The rhino won’t settle down yet…
花豹也不想
…and nor will the leopard.
它还在跟踪黑臀羚羊
He’s still following the impala.
还有鬣狗 正四处寻觅它的第二顿饭
And the hyena, on the prowl for her next meal,
它已经嗅到了什么
Has picked up his trail.
狮子们站了起来 准备出发
Narrator: the lions are up and ready to go.
最后喝上一口 然后就消失在苍茫的夜色之中
One last drink and they’re off into the night —

A force of nature, hungry and searching for prey.

The lion brothers aren’t with the pride

But can still monitor their movements

And turn up just in time to eat.

The lionesses don’t have to go far

Before they pick up the scent of the pregnant cow.
现在它几乎没有时间回到牛群去
Now she has little time to reach the herd.
狮子一门心思放在它们的猎物上
The lions are intent on their prize.
连这么一大群黑臀羚羊
Not even a herd of impala
都无法引诱它们放弃目标
Can tempt them away from their mission.
就在前方 母野牛已是精疲力竭 但它仍然一心一意
Up ahead, the tired but determined buffalo cow
它终于安全抵达同伴所在的地方
Finally reaches the safety of her companions.
现在该做第二件吃力的活儿了
Now it’s time for the next exhausting challenge —
分娩
To give birth.
成年的野牛 个头大 力气大 脾气坏
Adult buffalo are big and strong and have a mean temper.
狮子得打它们旁边过 才能接近母牛
The lions will have to get past them to reach the cow,
而母牛仍然和牛群有一定距离
Who is still some way behind them.
这是母牛最容易受到攻击的时候
This is the cow’s most vulnerable time —
小牛马上就要出生
The baby’s on its way.
幸运的是 野牛母亲天生就有快速分娩的本领
Fortunately, buffalo mothers are designed to give birth quickly.
一点迟疑也没有啊
Without hesitating,
它的后代马上就想要用稚嫩的四腿 站立起来
Her offspring tries to get up on his little legs.
至少数小时之内 想要乱蹦乱跳还是由不得它的
He won’t be gamboling about for at least a couple of hours.
现在是它最容易受到攻击的时候
This is his most vulnerable time.
象群就在不远处
The elephant herd is not far away.
若是与狮子偶然相遇
A chance encounter with the approaching lions
它们可能会发出响亮的咆哮
Could cause a big uproar.
象群继续穿过这片灌木草原 它们一边吃着东西
The herd is still moving through the bush, feeding.
它们一天要吃16个小时 才能给庞大的身体补充足够的能量
They’ll feed for 16 hours a day to fuel their massive bodies.
只有这头公象安下心来准备过夜了
Only the bull elephant has settled down for the night.
它睡得很香
He’s fast asleep.
现在狮子已经发现了
Now the lions have found the spot
小牛出生的地方
Where the buffalo calf was born,
它们已经把目标锁定在小牛崽的身上
And they have the young baby in their sights.
这是一次抢夺行动
This is a snatch-and-grab operation.
首先 在牛群里造成恐慌
First, send the buffalo into a panic,
然后冲进去 叼走小牛
Then rush in and pick off the baby.
它们包抄过来了
They close in.
牛群四散
And the buffalo scatter,
小牛已经暴露 很容易受到攻击
Leaving the baby out front and vulnerable.
但母亲的本能使它舍不得丢下小牛
But the mother’s instincts won’t let her leave her baby behind.
很快 牛群重新聚在一块
And in just a few more moments, the herd rallies round.
这只大块头的野牛已经受够了狮子
The larger buffalo have had enough of the lions
现在 它开始反击了
And now turn on the hunters.
野牛的力气很大
The buffalo are too strong to penetrate
没有狮子兄弟的帮助 是无法有所突破的
Without the help of one of the lion brothers.
狮子已经错失良机
The lions have missed their opportunity.
小牛安全了
The calf is safe.
与此同时 花豹正对羚羊紧追不舍
Meanwhile, the leopard is in hot pursuit of the impala.
现在已是黑夜 它们在浓密的灌木丛里
Now that it’s night, and they’re in thicker bush,
它有相当大的机会下手
He stands a good chance of making a kill.
鬣狗现在正盯着花豹
And the hyena is now tailing the leopard.
它有足够的实力从它嘴里偷走 它捕杀的猎物
She’s big and strong enough to steal a kill from him —
这要比自己去捕获猎物容易得多
Much easier than catching one herself.
一个字“等”
All she has to do is wait.
羚羊知道情况有点不妙
The impala know something’s up,
但它们看不到危险究竟在哪里
but they can’t see the danger.
等到它们看到了 就已经来不及了
When they finally do, it’s too late.
花豹企图悄悄地干掉对方
The leopard tries to kill silently,
但羚羊的惨叫响彻了夜空
But the impala’s cries echo through the night —
这正是鬣狗一心想要听到的声音
Just what the hyena’s been listening for.
花豹经常将其捕杀的猎物 拖到树上面去
Leopards often take their kills up into the trees
以此来避免引来其它的捕食动物
To avoid other predators.
但是 这只豹子实在是饿昏了头
But this cat is so hungry,
索性就在地上开吃起来
He starts his meal on the ground —
这是一个错误
A mistake.
它弄出这么大的声响来
Not only has he angered the elephant
不仅激怒了大象
With all this commotion,
连鬣狗也盯上了它
The hyena is also on to him.
对于鬣狗 花豹总是忌它三分
The leopard won’t argue with a hyena.
于是就眼睁睁地看着它偷走自己的食物
is watch her steal his meal.
但是 鬣狗走错了方向 它遇到了狂怒的大象
But the hyena’s headed for a nasty shock with the elephant…
于是它丢掉了到手的东西
…and she drops the prize.
花豹马上行动了
The leopard acts quickly…
于是拿回了给自己的食物
…and regains his meal.
第二次机会它不会再浪费了
He’s not going to waste a second chance.
