Qin Guan –

Watching the Tidal Bore
Qin Guan

Mume blossoms fade;
Ice melts away;
The speechless eastern breezes bring
In early spring.
I still remember the West Garden in the shade
Of willow trees on a fine day;
We slowly toured on sandy way.
I followed a handsome carriage wrong
When willow catkins flew along
With dancing butterflies above;
My mind was full of joy and love.
Beneath peach trees spring running riot
Disturbed all houses’ quiet.
Can I forget we drank and played on the pipe at night,
The moon was outshone by lanterns bright
And flowers screened by flying canopies?
The pleasure garden glitters still with gold,
But I who come again am growing old.
Everything I see evokes but sighs.
In misty dusk the wineshop streamers slanting low.
Leaning on railings of the bar,
I gaze afar.
What I see now and then is nesting crow on crow.
What can I do apart
With a homesick heart
Which follows secretly the running brook
Until the end of the earth or its farthest nook?

注释:
The poet compares his past pleasure with his present sorrow.

Qin Guan –

The song “Watching the Tidal Bore” is a poignant and nostalgic lyric written by Qin Guan, a lyricist of the Northern Song Dynasty. It starts with a reminiscence of the fun of visiting famous gardens in the old days in Luoyang, the western capital, and continues with a description of the disillusionment of returning to the old place this time, although the scenery is not different, but the enthusiasm of the old days is lost. The structure of the poem is a mixture of the past and the present, and the real and the imaginary, with a subtle euphemism.
