Gathering Mulberries
Lyu Benzhong
I’m grieved to find you unlike the moon at its best,
North, south, east, west.
North, south, east, west,
It would accompany me without any rest.

I am grieved to find you like the moon which would fain
Now wax, now wane.
You wax and wane.
When will you come around like the full moon again?

注释:
This lyric compares lovers’ parting to the waning moon and their meeting to the waxing moon.

Caisangzi – I hate that you are not like the moon in the river. It is a song written by Lv Benzhong, a lyricist of Song Dynasty. The first piece is about the moon in the sky as the only companion when we are thinking of each other after parting, and the second piece uses the moon’s “temporary fullness and loss” as a metaphor for people’s temporary gathering and long separation. The whole lyric is written purely in white, with the flavor of folk songs, sincere emotions, simple and natural. The structure is in the form of multiple chapters and chapters, which is a wonderful way to make the song fall back and forth and sing three sighs. The main body of the first and second pieces is the same, but with slight variations to form a sharp contrast, which is unique.
