国王与乞丐 [Kings and Paupers]
English #1 – Kings and Paupers
What happened that made
our love’s light fade
No matter we were face to face or back to back
We would be painful as long as we struggled
We had thought love was hard as rock
but it would just break within a second
Should we keep polishing our hearts even if they ache? When I held you tightly, I was richer than kings
and I was so happy
When I lose you, I am poorer than paupers
and I am deeply painfulOh oh
Oh oh
Who cried and who smiled?
Or were they both done by one?
And the more I insisted, it hurt more
The memories still drove me crazy
although I knew it was cliff ahead of me
And I finally returned to loneliness with regret
What’s still left after our love ended? When I held you tightly, I was richer than kings
and I was so happy
When I lose you, I am poorer than paupers
and I am deeply painfulAnd after all are gone in silence
Why do I still hate to part with them?
Oh oh
Who can understand it?In my memories, I was richer than kings
with luxurious happiness
After I lost you, I am poorer than paupers
My heart aches like being cutI miss the days you were by my side quietly
Oh oh
It was the most luxurious thing in that soft time
Oh oh
And how happy our love has been
how pain we will be
How pain we will be

This is a new translation I made for this song. The last one I made was three years ago. After all those years, I heard the song again recently, and had a deeper understanding as the lyrics went into my ears. I would like to interpret the lyrics again, so I decide to translate it again. But I wouldn’t like to just make changes on the previous one because they are totally two different translations, not just with minor changes. I personally think the last translation was more literal, and this one is closer to the author’s meaning. Any suggestions are welcome!
English #2 – Kings and Beggars
What happened? What happened?
A love has lost its luster
Facing it or hiding from it
The pain is relentless no matter what I do
I thought our love was as solid as a rock
but it shattered instantly instead
Don’t tell me I have to keep sculpting and polishing my own heartacheWhile I had you in my arms, I was richer than any king
How happy I once was
Since I lost you, I’m poorer than a beggar
The pain cuts so deepWho’s crying? Who’s smiling?
One person is playing two different roles
The more I hold on, the more the heartache destroys me
My memories are still fanning the flames
I knew if we kept going we’d eventually crash and burn
so I retreated into loneliness full of regret
What is left of love after it all ends? While I had you in my arms, I was richer than any king
How happy I once was
Since I lost you, I am poorer than a beggar
The pain cuts so deepWhen everything is over and calm, and it’s all in the past
why does every fiber of my being still refuse to let go?
Is there anyone who knows how I feel?In my memory, I was richer than any king
How extravagant that happiness was
Since I lost you, I’m poorer than a beggar
Grief cuts through my heart like a knifeI remember those times when you were quietly by my side
We squandered our love away in the most beautiful and tender moments
How happy the love was then
How piercing the pain is now
How piercing the pain is now

English #3 – A King and a Beggar
What’s going on
Love without light
Face to face or back to back
Struggle repeatedly but still aching
Had thought love was hard as rock
But it broke apart within a second
Should I ever polish my heart even if it hurtsHolding you tightly I am richer than a king
Used to be happy
Losing you I am poorer than a beggar
Deeply painfulOh oh
Oh oh
Who cries and who laughs
One plays two roles simultaneously
The more determined, the more agonizing
Memories are still playing this trick
Knowing to fall if I took one step ahead
Turning back to loneliness with pity
What’s still left after lovingHolding you tightly I am richer than a king
Used to be happy
Losing you I am poorer than a beggar
Deeply painfulWhen everything ends in silence
Why do you still miss it
Oh oh
Who can feel itIn my memories I am richer than a king
Too much happiness
Losing you I am poorer than a beggar
Painful as being cutMissing you accompanied me silently
Oh oh
Squandering beautifully in softened time
Oh oh
How happy love is
How deep pain is
How deep pain is
