威廉·莎士比亚的作品和人生
the life and work of William Shakespeare,
莎士比亚于1616年4月23日逝世
it is exactly 400 years to the day since he died,
距今日正好400年
on April 23rd, 1616.
我们位于埃文河畔斯特拉特福的
We are here at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre
皇家莎士比亚剧院
in Stratford-upon-Avon,
距离莎士比亚出生和埋葬的地方
barely a stone’s throw from where he was born,
咫尺之遥
and where he is buried.
莎士比亚的贡献不仅仅在于伟大的故事
It’s not just the great stories he writes,
丰富的人物形象和令人难忘的的文字
the wonderful characters he creates, and the memorable language,
莎士比亚让世人明白自己
Shakespeare tells us about ourselves.
他从各个角度审视世人
He sees us from every angle.
也许正因如此 在400多年中
Perhaps that is why, for more than four centuries,

he has inspired artists across the world.

All the world’s a stage,

所有男男女♥女♥ 不过演员而已
and all the men and women merely players:
他们有登场 也有退场
they have their exits and their entrances;
一个人终其一生 扮演着许多角色
and one man in his time plays many parts,
人生舞台可以分为7个阶段
his acts being seven ages.
起初是婴儿
At first the infant,
在保姆的怀中啼哭呕吐
mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms.
然后是满腹牢骚的学童
And then the whining schoolboy,
背着书包
with his satchel
满脸红光
and shining morning face,
像蜗牛一般不情愿地挪向学堂
creeping like snail unwillingly to school.
然后是情人
And then the lover,
像炉灶一样叹着气
sighing like furnace,
写着伤感的诗歌♥
with a woeful ballad
赞叹恋人的眼角眉梢
made to his mistress’ eyebrow.
然后是士兵 满口念着古怪的誓言
Then a soldier, full of strange oaths
胡须长得像豹子一般
and bearded like the pard,
争名夺誉 好勇斗狠
jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
在炮口上寻求着泡沫一样的荣名
seeking the bubble reputation even in the cannon’s mouth.
然后是法官
And then the justice,
胖胖圆圆的肚子塞满了阉鸡
in fair round belly with good capon lined,
眼神凌厉 胡须整洁
with eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
满嘴都是格言和老生常谈
full of wise saws and modern instances;
他便这样演着
and so he plays his part.
到了第6个阶段
The sixth age shifts
他成了消瘦的 趿着拖鞋的老叟
into the lean and slipper’d pantaloon,
鼻梁上夹着眼镜
with spectacles on nose
腰边悬挂着钱袋
and pouch on side,
他年轻时穿的长袜 虽然保存完好
his youthful hose, well saved,
套在他瘦削的小腿上却显得宽大异常
a world too wide for his shrunk shank;
他那浑厚的声音 变回了尖锐的童声
and his big manly voice, turning again toward childish treble,
像是吹着风笛和哨子
pipes and whistles in his sound.
最后一场戏中
Last scene of all,
终结这曲折离奇的一生
that ends this strange eventful history,
是孩提时代的再现 全然的遗忘
is second childishness and mere oblivion,
