Written on the Wall
Anonymous
A bundle of thatch pellmell lies;
Soon it makes a fire, soon it dies.
Unlike the root of a tree strong,
Burned slowly, its fire warms you long.
“Written on the Wall” is a poem written by Anonymous of the Song Dynasty. This poem uses a simple and rough tone to realistically portray two vivid images of thatch and scraps of wood: one is windy and flamboyant, but does nothing; the other is unhurried and solid in action, so that people can benefit. Through the contrast between thatch and roots, the poem exhorts the world to be practical and not vain; despite the meaning of a limerick, the style is simple and the meaning is far-reaching.
