atom：原子，不可再细分的最小颗粒
古希腊人认为，物质是不可能无限地分割下去的，到最后会小到不可再分，这种不可再分的最小微粒就是“原子”。
最先提出原子学说的是古希腊爱奥尼亚学派中的留基伯。他的学生德谟克利特继承并发展了原子学说，并用原子学说来解释宇宙。他认为宇宙由原子和虚空组成，原子从古以来就存在于虚空之中，既不能创生，也不能毁灭，它们在无限的虚空中运动着构成万物。他还提出原子在数量上无限，在形式上是多样的，如水的原子是圆而光滑的，它们相互间不能“勾住”，因而就像小球那样相互滚来滚去，而铁的原子则粗糙不平，因而互相粘附在一起成为“固体”，火的原子是多刺的，这便是烧灼使人感到痛的原因。
