Notion 源自拉丁语 notionem （概念、主意、注意），从17世纪开始产生“观念、有点模糊的信念”的含义，比如：
- modern notions about raising children
育儿新法 - She had only a vague notion of what might happen.
对于可能发生的事她只有一个模糊的概念。
到1746年， notion 又产生了“不太理性的倾向、突发奇想”的含义，也可以理解为“意图、打算、怪念头”，比如：
- take a sudden notion to do sth
突然想到要做某事 - When my wife was pregnant, she had a notion for coal.
我妻子怀孕时竟然想吃煤。
除抽象概念外， notion 还可以表示实物，指“别致的小东西、精巧的玩意儿”。美式英语用其复数 notions 表示“针头线脑等小件缝纫用品”或“缝纫用品店”，而这一概念在英式英语中则是用 haberdashery 表达。
