“瘟神”，god of plague，中国古代神话中专以瘟疫害人的鬼神，现在比喻作恶多端、面目可憎的人或邪恶势力。人们常用此来表达某人不吉利，会给别人带来灾难。瘟[wēn]，指流行性急性传染病：瘟疫、瘟病（pest; pestilence; plague）。神[shén]，表示神灵、神怪（god; deity; divinity）。
“送瘟神”是一个中国传统习俗。旧时人们对发生的瘟疫和疾病不能做出合理的解释，认为瘟疫是瘟神降灾于人间而导致的，故除了平时祭祀瘟神（offer sacrifices to the god of plague）之外，过年时还要集体送瘟神（send away the god of plague），以祈求来年家人健康平安。如今，这个俗语多用来比喻“get rid of something or somebody undesirable”。
