英语词源

story

该词和 history （历史）是姊妹词，都源自拉丁语 historia ‘recording of past events’ （过去事件的记载），且可追溯至希腊语 historia ‘enquiry’ （调查，探索）。不同的是， history 直接借自拉丁语，而 story 则经由英国法语（ Anglo-French ）进入英语。

12世纪法语借用了拉丁词 historia, 作 estorie,estoire, 13世纪英语又从法语借用了 estorie, 作 story , 表示“过去发生的事”或“过去事件的记载（或叙述）”。但从17世纪以后，这些词义渐为 history 所接管， story 转而多指“故事”或“（短篇）小说”，也表示“（对所发生的事的）叙述”，就是说 story 常带有虚构的含义。
