薄雾浓云愁永昼,
瑞脑消金兽。
佳节又重阳,
玉枕纱橱,
半夜凉初透。

东篱把酒黄昏后,
有暗香盈袖。
莫道不销魂,
帘卷西风,
人比黄花瘦。

Veiled in thin mist and thick cloud, how sad the long day!
Incense from golden censer melts away.
The Double Ninth comes again;
Alone I still remain
In silken bed curtain, on pillow smooth like jade.
Feeling the midnight chill invade.

At dusk I drink before chrysanthemums in bloom,
My sleeves filled with fragrance and gloom.
Say not my soul
Is not consumed. Should the west wind uproll
The curtain of my bower,
You’ll see a face thinner than yellow flower.

The poetess longs for her husband far away, saying she has become more slender than a chrysanthemum.

By describing the scene of enjoying chrysanthemums with wine on the Chrysanthemum Festival, it sets a bleak and lonely atmosphere and expresses the loneliness and isolation of the author who misses her husband. The first piece is about the season and the sorrow of parting; the second piece is about the chrysanthemum viewing. The author adds his own strong emotions to the description of natural scenery, making the objective environment and the characters’ inner emotions blend and intertwine. In particular, the last three lines of the poem use yellow flowers as a metaphor for the haggardness of people, implying the depth of longing with thinness, which is so subtle and deep that the words have an endless meaning.
