Song of Divination
Cao Zu

You are cold among pines, bamboos and vines.
When over the land the setting sun shines.
Alone you’re fragrant on a lonely lane.
To whom of your loneliness can you complain?

With the mume blossoms you may speak,
Whom lovers of flowers might seek.
But you would not exude fragrance to please;
It can’t be sought for as the breeze.

注释:
The orchid flower is personified to symbolize the poet himself.

The Song Dynasty lyricist Cao Yuan was the author of “Song of Divination”. No one is alone in the pathway, who can tell this hatred? It seems to share the language of plum blossoms, and there are still couples looking for fragrance. The fragrance is in the heartless place. The lyrics not only bring out the far-away and clear charm of the orchid, but also use symbolism, anthropomorphism and allusion to the author’s admiration for the hermit’s virtue, revealing his desire to leave the world and return to seclusion.
