Moored on River Qinhuai at Night

Du Mu

Cold water veiled in mist and sand bar in moonlight,

I moor on River Qinhuai near wineshops at night.

The songstress knows not the grief of a captive king,

By riverside she sings the song of parting spring.

The poem “Moored on River Qinhuai at Night” is a poem by Du Mu, a writer of the Tang Dynasty. The first half of the poem is about the night scene of Qinhuai, while the second half expresses his emotions. The poem draws on the history of Chen Shubao, the emperor of the late Tang Dynasty, who pursued lustful pleasures and eventually died. The poem is full of emotions and scenery, with a sorrowful mood, deep and subtle feelings, refined language and artistic conception, and an organic combination of writing scenery, lyricism and narrative.
