Imperial Favor Lost

Linghu Chu

No orioles in the little garden sing,

But butterflies dance before the Long Gate.

In vain I see another fleeting spring;

No imperial cab passes by of late.

The poem “Imperial Favor Lost” is a five-part poem composed by the Tang Dynasty writer Ling Hu Chu. It is a poem about the loneliness of a relegated and abandoned court lady who spends her days in a deep curtain. The poem successfully uses the techniques of contrast and simile, and its style is bright but not dense, playful but not flamboyant, and shallow but not straightforward.
