FLUNN: A woman was gossiping with a friend about a man she hardly knew.

(CONGREGATION CHUCKLING)
那天晚上，她做了个梦
That night she had a dream.
一只大手在她头顶出现 向下指着她
A great hand appeared over her and pointed down at her.
她顿时被巨大的罪恶感缠身
She was immediately seized with an overwhelming sense of guilt
第二天她去忏悔
The next day she went to confession.
她来到年迈的欧如科牧师跟前
She got the old parish prist, Father O’Rourke.
把整件事情告诉他
She told him the whole thing.
“对他人蜚短流长是罪恶吗？”，她问到
“Is gossiping a sin?” she asked the old man.
“是不是万能的上帝在梦中指责我？”
“Was that the hand of God Almighty pointing a finger at me?
“你能给我解答吗，神父？”
“Should I be asking your absolution, Father?

“TeII me, have I done something wrong?”
“当然有罪”，欧如科牧师回答道
(IMITATING IRISH ACCENT) “Yes.” Father O’Rourke answered her.

“Yes, you ignorant, badly brought up female.

“You have borne false witness against your neighbor.
全然不顾别人的名声
“You have played fast and loose with his reputation,

“and you should be heartily ashamed!”
于是女人连忙道歉并乞求宽恕
So the woman said she was sorry and asked for forgiveness.
“先别急”，欧如科牧师说
“Not so fast,” says O’Rourke.
“你现在回家，拿个枕头，然后到楼顶
“I want you to go home. Take a pillow up on your roof,
用刀割破它，再回来找我。”
“cut it open with a knife, and retum here to me.”
于是女人返回家，拿起枕头
So the woman went home, took a pillow off her bed,
从抽屉里拿出剪刀
a knife from the drawer,
从消防通道来到房♥顶，刺穿了枕头
went up the fire escape to her roof and stabbed the pillow.
接着她按照牧师说的回到教堂
Then she went back to the old parish priest as instructed.
他说：“你把枕头刺穿了吗？”
“Did you gut the pillow with a knife?” he says.
“是的 神父” – “结果呢”
“Yes, Father.” “And what was the result?”
她说：“羽毛”
“Feathers,” she said.
“羽毛”，他重复道
“Feathers,” he repeated.
“到处都是羽毛，神父”
“Feathers everywhere, Father.”
“现在，我要你回去
“Now, I want you to go back
把所有散落的羽毛都找回来”
“and gather up every last feather that flew out on the wind.”
“可是，这不可能”，她说
“WeII,” she said, “it can’t be done.
“我根本不知道它们到哪去了 风把它们吹得散落各地”
“I don’t know where they went. The wind took them all over.”
“那”，欧如科牧师说道，“就是流言”
“And that,” said Father O’Rourke, “is gossip!”

Well, I’m not gonna let her keep this parish in the Dark Ages,

and I’m not gonna let her destroy my spirit of compassion.
