blarney花言巧语
该词指表达流利但却阿谀奉承的言谈。在爱尔兰科克市（Cork）附近有一座布拉尼城堡（Blarney Castle）。相传，城堡内有一块布拉尼石（Blarney Stone），只要有人吻到此石即可变得能言善道，颇会阿谀奉承。该词即源于这一传说。
关于该词的使用，流传着这样一则故事。1602年，布拉尼城堡的堡主梦卡锡（McCarthy Mor）被乔治·卡鲁爵士（Sir George Carew，1504—1545）率领的英军打败，被迫投降。但梦卡锡总是花言巧语地以种种借口一再拖延，不履行投降条款，致使卡鲁成了宫廷里大臣们的笑柄。blarney就这样作为“能言善辩”的代名词进入了英语中。

据统计，每年全世界有近四十万张嘴亲吻这块石头。这块石头也被评选为世界上“细菌最多”的旅游景点。正是因为“巧言石”的传说，原本是个地名的英语单词 blarney 产生了“巧言”的含义。
