after a long week at sea.
一天以前 她从风中嗅到了猎物的气味
For a day now, she’s been spurred on by the scent of prey on the wind.
但现在真正看到了猎物们
But now that she’s gotten a look at them,
她的心凉了半截
she’s not so confident.

These are no ringed seals.
纳努并没有经验 去对付这些大块头
Nothing in Nanu’s experience tells her how to take on these big walruses.
成年的海象有她三倍的 重量 而且个个都武装到牙齿
The adults are three times her weight, armed with teeth like daggers.
或许她可以找到一只弱小的
Maybe she can find one weak enough or small enough to handle.
饥饿驱使她前进 也不 管成功的机率有多少了
Hunger compels her forward, despite the odds.
毕竟她还是太小 太年轻了
But she’s too young, and too small,
而且海象们也不是这么容易就犯的
and they’re being completely unaccommodating.
她最后的机会也消失了
Her last chance seems to be no chance.
纳努虽然长途跋涉来到了这里
Nanu may have come all
但最终可能还是敌不过饥饿
this way only to starve.
一只雄性北极熊打算从海上进行突击
The old male bear, however, plans an attack from the sea,
他准备趁海象们放松警惕的时候下手
and makes his move while the unsuspecting herd is napping.
他随着海风不断接近海象群
The male bear approaches downwind.
他偷偷地潜行到他们附近
He slips in undetected.
泽拉紧跟着姨妈往水里 逃去 但是却不幸被熊逮住了
Seela makes for the water behind her Auntie, but the bear grabs her.
姨妈想都没想 马上回头去救她
Auntie doesn’t hesitate. She races back to save the youngster.
多亏了她的奋力相拼 泽拉得以逃进水中
Her courage allows Seela to escape to the sea.
为了这个保护泽拉的使命 姨妈作出了巨大的牺牲
ln an act of devotion, Auntie makes the ultimate sacrifice.
泽拉一直在等待
Seela waits,
但姨妈再也回不来了
but Auntie will not return.
纳努显得越来越虚弱
Meanwhile, Nanu is growing weak.
没有食物 她也维持不了多久了
Without food, she can’t last much longer.
她知道雄性北极熊 是不习惯分享食物的
She knows the male is not in the habit of sharing,
而且他也可以轻松把自己干掉
and that he could easily kill her.
但现在就是展现妈妈的锻炼成果的时候了
But now is the time to call on the toughness her mother taught her.
她不能作出让步
She refuses to give in.
如果不能说服他分点 食物给自己 她肯定会饿死
He must share his kill or she will die.
这就是她一直站在这里的原因
And so she stands,
一直站着
and keeps standing,
直道这只雄性北极 熊允许她去碰那食物
until he allows her to take what she needs.

A single death preserves the lives of many.

For the next four years, Nanu and Seela are driven to this rocky outpost…

Nanu also returns to the ice kingdom of her birth.

ln the spring of her eighth year,

there’s an added excitement to being home.

Most of her life, she avoided male bears.

Now she finds herself drawn to one.
