世情薄,
人情恶,
雨送黄昏花易落。
晓风干,
泪痕残。
欲笺心事,
独语斜阑。
难,难,难!

人成各,
今非昨,
病魂常似秋千索。
角声寒,
夜阑珊。
怕人寻问,
咽泪装欢。
瞒,瞒,瞒!

The world unfair,
True manhood rare.
Dusk melts away in rain and blooming trees turn bare.
Morning wind high,
Tear traces dry.
I’d write to him what’s in my heart;
Leaning on rails, I speak apart.
Hard, hard, hard!

Go each our ways!
Gone are our days.
My sick soul groans like ropes of swing which sways.
The horn blows cold;
Night has grown old.
Afraid my grief may be descried,
I try to hide my tears undried.
Hide, hide, hide!

The poetess, divorced wife of Lu You, writes this lyric in reply to the preceding one.

《钗头凤·世情薄》是南宋唐婉创作的一首词。词的上阕写了唐婉在陆游母亲的压力下被迫分开后,无限痛苦的心情。下阕则分别写出了和陆游分别以后的境遇和心情。 全词直抒胸臆,哀婉动人,情感复杂。

“Phoenix Hairpin” is a song written by Tang Wan in the Southern Song Dynasty. The first section of the song describes Tang Wan’s painful feelings after she was forced to separate from Lu You under the pressure of his mother. In the second section, she writes about her situation and mood after she and Lu You were separated. The whole lyric is straightforward, sorrowful and moving, with complex emotions.
