思远人
晏几道
红叶黄花[1]秋意晚,
千里念行客。
飞云过尽,
归鸿无信,
何处寄书得。

泪弹不尽临窗滴。
就砚旋[2]研[3]墨。
渐写到别来,
此情深处,
红笺为无色。

Thinking of the Far-off One
Yan Jidao
Red leaves and yellow blooms fall, late autumn is done,
I think of my far-roving one.
Gazing on clouds blown away by the breeze
And messageless wild geese,
Where can I send him word under the sun?

My endless tears drip down by windowside
And blend with ink when they’re undried.
I write down the farewell we bade;
My deep love impearled throws a shade
On rosy papers and they fade.

This lyric describes a woman’s fond love for her roving lover.

Yan Jidao – 晏几道

《思远人·红叶黄花秋意晚》是北宋词人晏几道创作的一首闺中念远之词。上阕写秋晚而引起思念远方行客的离愁,下阕写愁极和泪研墨写信的情形。词与小晏惯常的“情溢词外,未能意蕴其中”这一风格不同。全词用笔甚曲,下字甚丽,宛转入微,味深意厚,堪称小晏词中别出机杼的异调。

The poem “Thinking of the Far-off One” is a poem written by Yan Qidao, a lyricist in the Northern Song Dynasty. In the first section, it is about the sadness of longing for a distant traveler in the late autumn, and in the second section, it is about the extreme sadness and the tears of writing a letter in ink. The lyrics are different from Xiao Yan’s usual style of “overflowing emotions outside the words, but not meaning within them”. The lyrics are very curved, the words are very beautiful, they are subtle and have a deep taste and meaning, which is a different tone among Xiao Yan’s lyrics.
