relentless (re LENT less) There’s no stopping the adjectives for “unstop-ping” (#4 is the exception). The root word derives from a word meaning “to melt,” but the “relentless” never melts, never slows. You can also say “unrelenting.”

  • The relentless pressure on Margaret to succeed had begun when she was three months old: her parents played the music of Mozart in the nursery because they had read that it aided development of an infant’s brain.
  • The unrelenting beat of the drum resounded through the tropical night, delighting the dancers (Were they doing the limbo?) and frustrating the would-be sleepers.
