On Parting Grief

Guan Yunshi

How bitter parting grief is! Lo!

How lush on Southern Plain the vernal grasses grow!

How endless streams before the royal temple flow!

The queens’ green robes at sunset undulate like waves;

The tall bamboos are dyed in red tears at their graves.[1]

Don’t you hear Lady Yu[2] in her besieged tent weep,

Surprised at the besiegers’ song when night was deep?

The beauty left the hero, shedding tears in flood;

She killed herself and let the grass reddened with blood.

What do we call the parting grief, alas!

The broken heart is heard just as a broken brass.

Why not cut down the tear-specked bamboo, though slender,

And mow the blood-stained grass,

Lest parting grief should grow and break your heart so tender?

注释:

[1]The sister queens wept over the death of Emperor Shun (2255—2205 BC), their tears specked the bamboo and they drowned themselves in the Dongting Lake.

[2]Lady Yu was the favorite mistress of General Xiang Yu (232—202 BC) who fought against Liu Bang for the throne, won ninty-nine battles but lost the last one, and, when besieged by Liu’s army, committed suicide with Lady Yu.
